Three different jobs, three different problems, and paying for one when you needed another is a common and avoidable waste.

A car can be perfectly balanced and badly aligned, or the other way round, and neither job improves the other. The symptom tells you which you need, and the rest of this page is how to read the symptom.

That last row matters more than it looks. Alignment cannot be set on a car with play in it. If a ball joint, wishbone bush or track rod end is worn, the geometry will not hold and you will be back within weeks having paid for nothing.

Toe, camber and caster — and what each does to a tyre

Three angles. Each one produces its own signature, and reading the tyre usually names the angle before a rig confirms it.

Toe is whether the wheels point slightly inwards or outwards viewed from above. It is the angle that matters most and the one most often out, because it is the easiest to disturb with a kerb.

A wheel with toe out of specification is being dragged sideways a fraction of a degree for every metre you drive. The wear signature is feathering: each tread block wears to a sharp edge on one side and a rounded one on the other. You find it with your hand, not your eyes — run a palm across the tread one way and it feels smooth, the other way and it catches. Toe wear is the fastest-acting of the three and can ruin a tyre in a few thousand miles.

Camber is whether the wheel leans in or out at the top. Excess camber concentrates the load on one shoulder, so the wear is confined to one edge and otherwise smooth — no feathering, just a tyre that is bald on the inside and has tread everywhere else. It is usually caused by a bent component or a sagging spring rather than by adjustment drifting, so camber that is out is often a symptom of something else.

Caster is the angle of the steering axis, and it is what makes the wheel self-centre after a corner. Caster does not wear tyres. It produces pull to one side and a steering wheel that does not return on its own. Uneven caster between the two front wheels is a classic cause of a car that pulls with perfectly even tyre wear — which confuses people, because they look at the tyres and conclude alignment cannot be the problem.

Tracking or four-wheel alignment?

This is the choice you are actually being offered, and the difference is not a level of thoroughness. It is a different measurement.

Tracking adjusts front toe, measured front wheel against front wheel. It is quick, it is cheap, and on a car whose only problem is front toe drift it is the correct job.

Four-wheel alignment measures all four wheels against the car’s own centre line, so it can see the rear axle as well as the front.

Here is why that matters, and it is the argument nobody makes clearly. If the rear axle has shifted — a pothole, a kerb, a perished bush, a minor knock years ago — the car no longer travels in the direction it is pointing. It crabs very slightly. The driver instinctively corrects with the steering wheel, so the car goes straight with the wheel held a few degrees off-centre.

Track the front wheels alone at that point and the machine dutifully sets front toe to a wheel that is not where it thinks it is. The steering wheel gets centred by aiming the front wheels crooked, and the front tyres start scrubbing. The car drives straight, the wheel is level, and you are now wearing out two tyres to hide a rear axle problem.

So: tracking is fine for maintenance. Four-wheel alignment is what you want after any real impact, or on any car where the steering wheel sits off-centre.

What a proper alignment should give you

A printout, showing:

  • All four wheels, not just the front
  • Before and after figures for each angle
  • The manufacturer’s specification range alongside your readings, so you can see what was out and by how much
  • Thrust angle — the number that tells you whether the rear axle is square

Without before-and-after figures you cannot tell whether anything was adjusted or whether the car was simply put on the rig and taken off again. It is a reasonable thing to ask for and any garage doing the job properly will hand it over without being asked.

One more: the steering angle sensor. On a modern car, stability control and lane assist read straight-ahead from that sensor. Correct the geometry without recalibrating it and the car believes straight ahead is somewhere it is not.

When balancing does not fix the vibration

Balancing corrects weight distribution. If the wheel has been balanced twice and still shakes, the problem is not weight.

  • A buckled rim. An alloy can distort enough to vibrate at speed while still looking perfect — pothole damage rarely leaves a visible mark. Adding more weights to a bent wheel does not work
  • A tyre out of round, or with a broken belt. The tyre is balanced but not circular. It vibrates regardless
  • A worn wheel bearing or a seized brake, both of which produce speed-related vibration that no amount of balancing touches
  • Cupped tyres, which vibrate and drone because of the wear pattern worn into them — and which point at the dampers rather than at the wheel

The order that saves money

  1. Check for play first. Ball joints, track rod ends, wishbone bushes, wheel bearings. Nothing else is worth doing until this is clear
  2. Read the wear pattern on the existing tyres, which usually diagnoses the fault before the rig confirms it
  3. Align the car
  4. Then buy tyres

Doing it the other way round — new tyres, then alignment when they wear out — is the single most common way people spend twice. A misaligned car can scrub a front tyre out in a few thousand miles, and a pair of mid-range tyres costs several times what an alignment does.

Worth knowing on the legal side: the 1.6mm minimum applies across the central three-quarters of the tread. A tyre worn below the limit on one edge is illegal and an MOT failure while the rest of it still looks serviceable.

Reading a Birmingham car’s tyres

Local wear patterns are consistent enough to guess the cause from the tread.

Inner-edge wear on the front tyres of a car that lives on inner-city terraced streets is almost always accumulated kerb contact — no single memorable impact, just months of parking nose-in against a kerb at walking pace.

Outer-shoulder wear with feathering usually means a great deal of low-speed steering: tight retail parking, multi-storey ramps, repeated full-lock manoeuvres.

A car that started pulling after one specific journey has generally met a pothole, and the checks worth doing after a pothole strike go beyond the geometry to the rim and the sidewall.

The impact that shifts geometry rarely feels dramatic at the time. That is the awkward part — the damage typically announces itself months later as tyre wear rather than immediately as a pull.

When should you call a garage?

Book an alignment if the car pulls, the wheel sits off-centre, or a tyre is wearing on one edge. Book it before you buy tyres rather than after.

Book balancing if the shake appears in a speed band and disappears above and below it. Through the wheel means front; through the seat means rear.

Book four-wheel alignment specifically after a significant pothole or kerb impact, after any suspension or steering work, and on any car where the steering wheel is not level when the car is going straight.

Neither if the vibration only happens under braking. That is disc thickness variation and it needs the brakes looked at instead.

Uneven caster between the two front wheels produces pull and poor self-centring with perfectly even wear, which is why the tyres can look fine.

The wheel has been balanced twice and still shakes. Why?

Because the problem is not weight distribution. A buckled rim can distort enough to vibrate while looking perfect, and adding weights to a bent wheel achieves nothing. A tyre out of round or with a broken belt does the same. So do a worn wheel bearing, a seized brake, and cupped tyres caused by tired dampers.

Should I get alignment done before or after new tyres?

Before, always. Fitting new tyres to a misaligned car simply starts the same clock again, and it is the most common way people pay twice. Have the wear pattern on the old tyres read at the same time — inner edge, outer shoulder and feathering mean different things, and the pattern usually identifies the cause before the rig confirms it.
