What is DPF cleaning?
A diesel particulate filter sits in the exhaust system and traps soot so it does not reach the air. It has to be emptied by burning that soot off — a process called regeneration. When the car can no longer do that for itself, it needs help, and there are three levels of it.
Forced (static) regeneration. Diagnostic equipment commands the engine to run a regeneration cycle under controlled conditions on the ramp. This is the answer for a filter that is too blocked to clear itself but not beyond saving, and it is by far the cheapest intervention.
Off-car cleaning. The filter is removed and cleaned properly, which can shift ash as well as soot. It costs more than a forced regeneration and considerably less than a new filter, and it is worth asking about before accepting a replacement quote.
Replacement. The last resort, and expensive.
Which of the three you need is a question of soot against ash — and that is measurable rather than a matter of opinion.
Signs your DPF needs attention
- The DPF warning light — usually an exhaust-with-dots symbol. What to do the moment it appears is worth reading first, because one proper run often clears it
- Reduced power, or the car restricting itself to protect the engine, which means driving will no longer clear it
- The oil level rising without you adding any — fuel dilution from repeated failed regenerations. This one needs acting on
- Regenerations becoming frequent — the cooling fan running hard, a raised idle and stop-start refusing to work, every couple of weeks rather than occasionally
- Poor fuel economy and a hot, acrid smell after runs
- Failed MOT on diesel smoke opacity
What causes a DPF to block?
A blocked filter is a symptom. That is the most important sentence on this page, and it is why we look for a cause before quoting a filter.
Short journeys — the dominant cause. Passive regeneration needs sustained running above about 40mph to get the exhaust hot enough naturally. Active regeneration needs ten to twenty minutes of continuous running to complete. A five-mile trip provides neither, so cycles start and abort, and soot accumulates.
The wrong engine oil. Ash is the non-combustible residue that regeneration cannot remove, and most of it comes from the oil additive package. A high-SAPS oil in a DPF car fills the filter years early. This is why the correct low-SAPS specification matters more on a diesel than almost anything else.
A faulty differential pressure sensor, which measures the filter’s restriction. If it reads wrongly, the car either regenerates constantly or never at all.
A leaking injector, a failing EGR valve, or a turbo leaking oil — all of which put more soot or oil into the filter than it was designed to handle.
An empty additive tank. Some PSA-group cars (Peugeot, Citroën and related models) dose a fluid into the fuel to lower the temperature at which soot burns. If that tank is empty, the car physically cannot reach regeneration temperature and the filter will keep blocking however you drive.
What we do — our DPF process
- Read the actual numbers — soot load, calculated ash load, distance since the last successful regeneration, and how many have been aborted. This is what tells us whether the filter can still be saved.
- Check the oil level and condition. If fuel dilution has pushed it above maximum, that is dealt with first, because running a regeneration on diluted oil makes it worse.
- Find the underlying fault before intervening. Differential pressure sensor, injector performance, EGR operation, turbo oil leak, additive level. Cleaning a filter without this step means doing it again.
- Choose the intervention — forced regeneration, off-car clean, or replacement — and explain honestly which one the numbers support.
- Oil and filter change where dilution has occurred, and a road test to confirm a completed regeneration.
- Talk about driving pattern. If the car’s use is the cause, we will say so rather than take the money twice.

The gap between the second row and the last is the entire argument for acting on the light early.
How long does it take?
A forced regeneration is an hour to ninety minutes on the ramp. Diagnosis is an hour. An off-car clean is usually a day, since the filter has to come off and go back. A replacement is half a day to a day.
What happens if you delay it?
Three things get worse, in order.
The filter moves from cleanable to replaceable. Soot can be burned off; ash cannot. As soot compacts and ash accumulates, you cross from a £150 job to an £1,200 one.
The oil gets diluted. Every aborted regeneration puts unburnt diesel into the sump. Diluted oil thins and loses its ability to protect the bearings and the turbo, so a DPF problem quietly becomes an engine problem.
The car goes into limp mode, and at that point driving will not clear it at all.
On removal: we do not do it. Since February 2014 a vehicle fitted with a DPF from new that no longer has one is an automatic MOT failure. Using a vehicle modified so it no longer meets its type-approved emissions standard is an offence, and it is a modification your insurer is entitled to know about. It also leaves whatever blocked the filter completely unaddressed.
DPF cleaning for Birmingham drivers
This is the service most shaped by where you drive, and Birmingham is close to a worst case for it.
A diesel particulate filter needs heat and time. The driving pattern that provides both is a sustained run at road speed. The driving pattern inside the A4540 Middleway provides neither — short hops, low speeds, and journeys that end before a regeneration cycle can finish. A regeneration that starts on the way home and is interrupted when you park has achieved nothing except putting diesel in your sump.
There is a pattern we see often enough to name: the car finally gets hot enough to attempt a regeneration in slow-moving evening traffic, the cycle is interrupted, and the warning light appears a few days later. The filter is not defective. It has never been given the conditions it needs.
The Clean Air Zone adds a wrinkle worth being straight about. Euro 6 diesels are compliant and pay nothing, so a good many drivers sensibly kept a newer diesel rather than changing car — which means a substantial local fleet of DPF-equipped diesels doing exactly the urban mileage that blocks them.
What actually helps, in order of usefulness:
- One sustained run a week — twenty minutes at 50–60mph in a lower gear than usual, so the revs sit around 2,500–3,000. This is the single most effective habit
- The correct low-SAPS oil, every time. Ash is permanent; the oil you use decides how fast it accumulates
- Act on the first light rather than the third
And one honest point we would rather make now than after you have spent money: if a car only ever does short local journeys, a diesel is the wrong tool for the job. Nothing is faulty. The car is being asked to live a life it was not designed for. If you are running a DPF diesel on a two-mile commute, that is worth a conversation before the next filter rather than after.

Active regeneration injects extra fuel late in the cycle to raise exhaust temperature, and when the journey ends before the cycle finishes, some of that diesel washes past the piston rings into the sump. Diluted oil thins and loses its ability to protect the bearings and the turbo, so a DPF problem quietly becomes an engine problem. A dipstick above maximum that you did not cause is a reason to stop.
What driving actually clears a DPF?
Twenty minutes of continuous running at 50–60mph, holding a lower gear than usual so the revs sit around 2,500–3,000. The point is sustained exhaust temperature over time, not distance — which is why a gentle motorway cruise at 40mph in top gear often makes no difference. Doing that once a week is the single most effective habit for anyone running a diesel on mostly urban journeys.
Is a diesel the wrong car for city driving?
For a car that only ever does short local journeys, honestly yes — and nothing about the car is faulty.
