The reason is that a modern turbodiesel produces enormous torque at low revs, and it does so in violent individual pulses. A solid flywheel passes those pulses straight into the gearbox, where they are noisy and, over time, destructive. The dual-mass design absorbs them between its two halves. It is genuinely good engineering — it is the reason a modern diesel feels civilised at 1,500rpm.

What it is not is permanent. The springs and the friction surfaces inside wear, and the duty that wears them fastest is exactly the Warwick Road commute: repeated pull-aways, frequent gear changes at low revs, and above all labouring the engine — sitting at 1,200rpm in too high a gear at 20mph.
