What is battery testing and replacement?
Testing is the part that matters, because “the battery is flat” and “the battery has failed” are different conclusions with different repairs — and a car that keeps going flat frequently has nothing wrong with its battery at all.
A proper test measures three things:
- State of charge — how full it is right now
- State of health — how much of its original capacity remains, measured against its rated cold cranking amps
- Charging system output under load, because a battery that keeps discharging is often an alternator problem wearing a battery’s clothes

Signs your battery needs attention
- Slow, laboured cranking, particularly on a cold morning
- Headlights dimming noticeably at idle and brightening as you rev

- Stop-start has quietly stopped working — a genuinely useful early warning, usually months before anything else
- The battery warning light, which is a charging warning rather than a battery one

What kills car batteries?
Short journeys. The dominant cause, and it works cumulatively. Starting an engine takes a substantial amount out of a battery and it takes a sustained run to put it back. A trip to the shops and home does not, so each journey leaves a small deficit. Through spring and summer there is enough reserve capacity to hide it. As temperatures drop, chemical capacity falls and the engine needs more current to turn over — and the accumulated deficit finally exceeds what is left.
So the cold does not cause the failure. It exposes one that has been building since summer. That is why batteries fail in the same fortnight every December on cars that were fine in October.
Age. Four to six years is typical in the UK, less on a car doing short urban journeys.
Standing unused, which lets a battery self-discharge and, if it sits flat, sulphate — permanent capacity loss.
Parasitic drain — an aftermarket alarm, a tracker, a faulty module or a boot light that never goes out.
The wrong battery type. A conventional lead-acid battery in a stop-start car fails within months, because the duty cycle is completely different.

Stop-start batteries — EFB, AGM and registration
If your car has engine stop-start, two things are non-negotiable and both get skipped.
It needs an EFB (enhanced flooded battery) or an AGM (absorbent glass mat) battery. This is not an upsell. A conventional battery is designed to be discharged hard once per journey and then recharged. A stop-start car restarts the engine dozens of times in a trip, and between restarts the battery alone runs the lights, the climate fan, the infotainment and the electric steering. Fitting an ordinary battery to save money reliably costs more inside a year. An AGM must never be replaced with an EFB, though an EFB car can generally be upgraded to AGM.
On a great many makes the new battery must also be registered to the battery management system. The BMS learns the ageing profile of the battery it has and tapers charging to suit. Fit a new one without telling it and the car keeps charging to a worn battery’s profile — leaving the new battery chronically undercharged from day one and shortening its life considerably. It takes minutes and it is skipped surprisingly often.

What moves the price is capacity, type and, on some cars, where the battery lives — under a seat or in the boot rather than in the engine bay.
How long does it take?
Testing is ten minutes. A straightforward replacement including registration is 20–45 minutes and comfortably a wait. Batteries in awkward locations take longer. A parasitic drain trace is open-ended by nature, so we agree a time limit with you before starting.
What happens if you delay it?
The obvious cost is being stranded, usually on the coldest morning of the year and usually when you need the car.
The less obvious one is that a dying battery is hard on the alternator. A battery that will not hold charge means the alternator runs at high output continuously trying to fill it, which shortens its life — so a £120 battery left too long can contribute to a £400 alternator.
Low voltage also causes electrical faults that look like something else entirely. Modules misbehave, warning lights appear across unrelated systems, stop-start disables itself, and on cars with electric power steering the assistance can reduce. People spend real money chasing those before anyone tests the battery.
