Aston sits just north of us across the Middleway — B6, close enough that most people here are with us in a few minutes. It is also one of the few parts of Birmingham where a specific piece of road infrastructure shapes what goes wrong with the cars.

That road is the A38(M) Aston Expressway, and its tidal-flow lane system is genuinely unusual. Seven lanes whose direction reverses depending on the peak, with no central barrier, feeding into and out of the city. The traffic pattern it produces — long queues that release into short bursts of acceleration, then queue again — is about the hardest routine cycle you can put a drivetrain through.

Getting to us from Aston

You are roughly a mile and a half south. From most of B6 it is a short run down towards the Gun Quarter, and you avoid the worst of the Expressway queues going in that direction outside the peak.

Clean Air Zone: Aston sits outside the zone, which follows the A4540 Middleway. We are inside it. That means if your vehicle is non-compliant — broadly petrol older than Euro 4, diesel older than Euro 6 — you would pay the daily charge coming to us, even though you do not pay it at home. Most vehicles are compliant and pay nothing, and Birmingham City Council’s checker settles it from your registration in seconds. Common car problems for Aston cars

Clutch and gearbox wear from Expressway queuing. Stop-start on a fast road is worse for a drivetrain than stop-start in town, because the gaps invite harder acceleration. Manual cars wear the clutch friction plate; automatics suffer differently — torque converters generate a great deal of heat when they are repeatedly locking and unlocking in slow traffic, and that heat degrades the transmission fluid. Sluggish or jerky shifts in an automatic, especially when warm, are worth investigating early. Automatic gearbox fluid is not “sealed for life” in the way many owners are told.

Brake wear, for the same reason. The queue-and-release pattern means heavy braking events rather than gentle ones, and heavy braking wears pads disproportionately.

Battery failure from overnight kerbside standing. Aston’s older housing stock is largely terraced with on-street parking, so a very high proportion of cars sit at the kerb overnight and are used for short journeys. A battery needs a sustained run to recover the charge a cold start takes out of it, and short trips never quite repay the debt. Over a winter, the deficit compounds. This is why batteries fail in December on cars that were fine in October — the cold does not create the fault, it exposes one that had been building since summer. Slow cranking, dimming lights at idle or a dashboard that flickers when you start are the warnings.
