Catalytic Converter Repair in Birmingham
Catalytic converters rarely fail on their own — something kills them. We test the sensors and find the cause before anyone quotes you for a cat.
What is a catalytic converter?
A ceramic honeycomb coated with platinum, palladium and rhodium, sitting in the exhaust system. Gases pass through it and chemical reactions on that coated surface convert carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons into carbon dioxide and water, and reduce oxides of nitrogen.
Two things about it explain most of what goes wrong. It only works properly above roughly 400°C, so a cold engine is producing largely untreated exhaust. And the engine judges its performance using lambda sensors before and after it — comparing the two readings is how the ECU decides the cat is doing its job.
Repair work here means one of three things: fixing whatever is damaging the cat, replacing a failed or stolen unit, or — very often — proving the cat is fine and the fault is somewhere else.
Signs of a catalytic converter problem
- A P0420 fault code — “catalyst efficiency below threshold” — and an engine management light
- A rattle from underneath that sounds like loose gravel in a tin, worst at idle or on light throttle. That is a broken ceramic substrate
- Loss of power, especially at higher revs, with the engine feeling strangled — a blocked cat
- A rotten-egg or sulphur smell, usually meaning the engine is running rich and the cat is overloaded
- Failed emissions at the MOT
- Sudden, extremely loud exhaust noise with no warning, and the car sounding like it has no silencer at all — that is theft, not failure
What causes catalytic converters to fail?
Here is the thing worth understanding before you spend anything: catalytic converters very rarely fail on their own. They are passive components with no moving parts. Something kills them, and if that something is still there when a new one is fitted, the new one dies the same way on the same timescale.
The usual killers:
An engine running rich. Excess fuel reaching the cat burns inside it, taking it far past its design temperature and melting the substrate. Faulty lambda sensors, air metering problems and leaking injectors all do this.
Misfires. Raw fuel dumped into a hot cat is the fastest way to destroy one — which is exactly why a flashing engine management light means stop rather than continue.
Burning oil. Oil ash coats the catalyst surfaces and poisons them, and phosphorus in the oil additive package does the same. An engine using oil is steadily killing its cat.
Coolant leaks into the combustion chamber, which contaminate the coating.
Short journeys. A cat that never reaches operating temperature never works properly, and unburnt deposits accumulate rather than being converted.
Physical damage — impact from a speed hump or road debris, or corrosion of the outer casing.
Theft. Precious metal content makes them a target, and this has been a persistent problem across the West Midlands. Higher-clearance vehicles are easier to get under, and hybrids are disproportionately targeted because their cats run cooler and tend to retain more of the precious metal.
What we do — our process
- Never take P0420 at face value. The code says the ECU is unhappy with the comparison between the two lambda sensors. It does not say the cat is the reason.
- Test the sensors themselves — live data on switching speed and response. A lazy rear sensor produces a P0420 on a perfectly healthy cat, and it is a fraction of the price.
- Check for exhaust leaks upstream. Air drawn in before a sensor makes the readings meaningless.
- Look for the killer. Misfire counts, fuel trims, oil consumption, coolant loss. This is the step that protects your money.
- Temperature differential across the cat — a working cat runs hotter at its outlet than its inlet, because the reactions are exothermic.
- Back-pressure test where a blockage is suspected, which is the definitive check for a collapsed substrate.
- Then quote, and only then.

Prices vary widely by vehicle, because the precious metal loading and the shape of the unit differ enormously. A cat for a small petrol hatchback and one for a large diesel are not comparable items.
How long does it take?
Diagnosis is an hour or two. Replacement is typically one to three hours, longer where the unit is integrated into the manifold or fixings have corroded. A lambda sensor is usually under an hour.
What happens if you delay it?
A blocked cat is the urgent version. It restricts the exhaust, which chokes the engine, raises exhaust temperatures and puts strain on valves and, on a turbo car, the turbocharger. Power falls away and the car may drop into limp mode.
A failed but flowing cat is less urgent mechanically but it is an automatic MOT failure on emissions, and it means you are emitting what the cat exists to remove.
The escalation that costs the most is the one that starts elsewhere: a misfire or a rich-running fault left unattended for months will convert a £60 sensor problem into a £600 cat.
On removal — it gets offered and the answer is no. A missing catalytic converter is an MOT failure, and using a vehicle modified so it no longer meets the emissions standard it was type-approved to is an offence. We will not remove one or fit a hollow replacement.
Catalytic converters for Birmingham drivers
Two local pressures, and they need different responses.
Theft. This has been a real and persistent problem across the West Midlands, and the practical measures are worth knowing because they genuinely help. Park where the underside of the car is not easily accessible — against a wall, kerbside wheels tight in, or nose-in against another vehicle. Park in view of a light or a camera where you can. If your car has a tilt-sensitive alarm, use it. Cat marking and etching makes a stolen unit harder to sell on, and a protection cage or clamp is a genuine deterrent. If it does happen, the giveaway is unmistakable: you start the car and it sounds like it has no exhaust at all. Do not drive it further than necessary — the engine is running unmetered and the noise alone is an offence.
Short journeys. The everyday problem, and quieter. A cat needs sustained heat to work, and a city where a great many trips are under five miles is a city where cats spend much of their lives below operating temperature. Unburnt deposits build up rather than being converted, efficiency drops, and eventually the ECU notices and logs P0420.
The remedy is unglamorous and it works: a sustained run of twenty minutes or more at road speed, regularly. It does the same favour for a diesel particulate filter, and it is the single most useful habit for anyone whose car is used mainly inside the ring road.
