What is exhaust repair?

The exhaust carries combustion gases away from the engine, silences them, and cleans them. It is a chain of parts, and most repairs replace one section rather than the whole system.

Front to back: the manifold bolted to the cylinder head; the flexible joint that absorbs engine movement; the catalytic converter and, on diesels, the particulate filter; the centre section with a resonator; and the rear silencer or back box. The whole thing hangs on rubber mounts, and lambda sensors screw into it to tell the engine how the mixture is burning.

Sectional repair is usually possible and usually cheaper. Whether it is sensible depends on the condition of what remains — replacing one rusted section of a system that is rusted throughout buys you a few months.

Signs you need exhaust work

  • It has got louder, or has developed a drone at certain speeds
  • A blowing or puffing sound that changes with engine revs — a hole or a failed gasket
  • A rattle underneath over bumps, most often a split mount or a heat shield rather than the exhaust itself
  • Scraping over speed humps or steep entrances
  • Fumes noticeable inside the car — this one is not a convenience issue, see below
  • An engine management light from a lambda sensor confused by an air leak upstream of it
  • Reduced power with a blocked catalytic converter or particulate filter

If you can smell exhaust fumes inside the car, stop using it until it has been checked. Carbon monoxide is odourless — what you are smelling is the other combustion products travelling with it, and the symptoms of exposure (headache, drowsiness, nausea) are easy to mistake for something else while driving. Drive with windows open and get it seen.

What causes exhausts to fail?

Corrosion from the inside out. This is the one most people have backwards. Burning fuel produces water vapour, and on a cold exhaust it condenses inside the pipework. A long run gets the whole system hot enough to boil it off. A short trip does not — so the water sits in the silencer, mixes with combustion acids, and rots the system from within. The exhaust that fails first is the one on a car doing short journeys.

Road salt, which attacks from the outside and concentrates where mud and debris sit against the metal.

Physical damage. Speed humps, steep driveway entrances and kerbs catch low-slung sections and crush or split them.

Mount failure. Rubber mounts perish, and once one goes the extra movement is transferred into the flexible joint, which then cracks. A £15 mount left alone becomes a flexi joint or a front pipe. This is why we replace tired mounts as part of any exhaust job.

What we do — our exhaust process

  1. On the ramp with the engine running. A blow is found by listening and feeling for it, not by looking — small leaks at a joint or a hairline crack are invisible cold and obvious warm.
  2. Assess the whole system, not just the noisy bit. We tell you honestly whether a sectional repair will last, or whether you will be back in three months.
  3. Check the mounts and heat shields. A large share of “exhaust rattles” are a loose heat shield — a genuinely cheap fix that gets quoted as something much bigger.
  4. New gaskets and clamps on every joint we open. Reusing a crushed gasket is how a repair comes back blowing.
  5. Check the lambda sensors where a fault code is involved, because an air leak before a sensor makes a healthy engine look like it is running lean.
  6. Road test and re-check for leaks once everything is at temperature.

What moves the price is corrosion. Seized fixings turn a 30-minute job into a two-hour one, and on a badly rotted system a bolt that shears takes the work somewhere else entirely. We tell you if that risk applies before we start.

How long does it take?

A back box or a mount is 30–60 minutes and comfortably a wait-while-you-do-it job. A centre section or flexi joint is one to two hours. A manifold is two to three hours, longer if fixings shear.

What happens if you delay it?

Safety first. A leak forward of the cabin can let exhaust gas in through the bulkhead or a floor seal. That is the one genuine urgency on this page.

Then cost escalation. A blowing manifold gasket sends hot gas at the flexible joint and cooks it. A failed mount lets the system swing and cracks the flexi. A leak before a lambda sensor makes the engine run rich to compensate, which wastes fuel and, over time, damages the catalytic converter — turning a £60 repair into a four-figure one.

Then the MOT. An exhaust that leaks, is insecure, or is noticeably noisier than the original system is a failure. A missing or defective catalytic converter is a failure. Emissions are measured at the tailpipe, and a leak upstream will skew that reading.

Exhaust repair for Birmingham drivers

Exhausts have a hard time here for two reasons that pull in the same direction.

The first is journey length. A city where a great many journeys are under five miles is a city where exhausts never dry out. The condensation that forms inside the system on every cold start needs sustained heat to evaporate, and a trip across town does not provide it. The result is that local systems corrode from the inside, which is exactly why an exhaust can look sound from underneath and still be paper-thin when tapped. If your car rarely does a long run, the exhaust is on a shorter clock than the mileage suggests.

The second is what the underside meets. Traffic calming through the inner suburbs, sunken covers and patched surfaces on routes like the streets around Digbeth, and steep entrances into terraced back yards all catch low-hanging sections. What usually gives first is a mount, and once a mount has gone the rest of the system starts working loose.

Two things worth doing. Have the mounts checked whenever the car is on a ramp — they cost very little and they prevent the expensive failures downstream of them. And get a rattle identified rather than lived with: a large share turn out to be a heat shield, which is among the cheapest repairs on the car, and while it is rattling it masks the noises you would want to hear.
