Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil. The useful part is not the colour, it is the timing — when the smoke appears identifies where the oil is getting in.

Before anything else, establish the rate: check the oil level every 500 miles for a month. Some consumption is normal — up to a litre per 1,000 miles is within specification on a good many engines — and the rate is what tells a garage whether you have a problem or a characteristic.

First, confirm it is blue

Exhaust colour is genuinely diagnostic, and blue is easy to confuse with grey or thin white in poor light. Look at it against a dark background, and get someone else to watch while you drive.

Blue smoke also has a distinctive smell — sharp and oily rather than sweet or fuel-like — and it tends to hang in the air rather than dissipating.

The four cases in detail

Start-up only: valve stem seals

Small rubber seals sit on top of the valve guides and stop oil running down the stems into the ports. As they age and harden, oil seeps past while the engine is switched off and pools on top of the closed valves.

Start the engine and that pool is drawn straight into the cylinder and burned — hence a puff of blue smoke that clears within seconds and then does not return. The same thing happens after a long wait at traffic lights, which is why the second puff on pulling away is so characteristic.

Encouragingly, this does not mean the engine is worn out. The bores and rings can be in excellent condition; it is a rubber part that has aged.

Under acceleration: piston rings and bores

Under load, cylinder pressure is highest and the rings are working hardest. If they are worn, or the bore has lost its cross-hatch, oil gets past into the combustion chamber and burns with the fuel.

The pattern is smoke that appears when you ask the engine for something — pulling up a hill, joining a dual carriageway — and gets worse as the engine warms. Consumption usually rises gradually over years rather than suddenly.

A leak-down test is the one that settles it. Unlike a compression test, which only tells you a cylinder is low, a leak-down test tells you where the pressure is escaping to: hissing at the oil filler means the rings, at the inlet means an inlet valve, at the exhaust means an exhaust valve, and bubbles in the expansion tank mean the head gasket.

On overrun: turbo seals

Lift off the throttle at speed and manifold vacuum is high while the turbo is still spinning fast. If the turbo’s oil seals have gone, that vacuum pulls oil straight through into the intake or exhaust.

Supporting evidence is easy to find without tools: take the boost pipe off the intercooler and look for pooled oil. A film is normal; a pool is not. A whine that rises with boost is another sign.

The thing to insist on before buying a turbo: find out why the seals failed. A blocked crankcase breather raises pressure at the turbo’s oil drain and stops oil returning freely, which forces it past the seals. Fit a new turbo with the breather still blocked and it fails the same way, usually within months. Anyone quoting for a turbo on an oil-burning complaint should be able to tell you what the crankcase pressure measured and whether the oil return line is clear.

Constantly

Heavy smoke at all engine speeds usually means advanced ring or bore wear, or a turbo that has failed comprehensively. At this point the question shifts from what to repair to whether repairing it makes sense on that car.

Will it fail an MOT?

Yes. Dense blue smoke — or clearly visible black smoke — from the exhaust is an MOT defect in its own right, independent of anything else. Diesels are additionally given a metered opacity test, so a smoking diesel has two ways to fail.

Oil consumption also does slower damage to the emissions system. Burnt oil leaves ash behind, and ash permanently loads a diesel particulate filter — regeneration cannot remove it — as well as coating catalytic converter surfaces. An engine burning oil steadily will take out a DPF years early.

The first two rows are worth doing before the last three are discussed. A breather at £70 that has been causing turbo seal failure is a very different outcome from a turbo at £1,400 fitted to an engine that then destroys it again.

When should you call a garage?

Straight away if the smoke is heavy and constant, if the oil level has fallen below minimum, or if the smoke arrived suddenly rather than creeping up. A sudden change points at the turbo, and a failing turbo can eventually put its own debris into the engine.

Once you have a month of readings if it is a puff on start-up and the consumption is modest. That is the least serious version of this and it is worth measuring before spending.

When you ring, tell us three things: when the smoke appears, the consumption rate in litres per 1,000 miles, and whether there is oil pooled in the intercooler pipes.
