How Often Should You Change Engine Oil?
For most UK drivers: annually, or every 10,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The reason that is not the whole answer is that oil does not wear out mechanically. It wears out chemically — the additives deplete, the detergents saturate, and it gets diluted with fuel and water. Chemistry runs on a calendar as well as an odometer, which is why every manufacturer schedule is written as “time or distance, whichever comes first” and why a car that barely moves still needs an annual change.
The second reason is that most handbooks contain two schedules, and a great many people are on the wrong one.

The “severe service” schedule, and why it is the normal one here
Open almost any handbook and alongside the standard interval you will find a shorter one, described as severe, arduous or city use. The conditions listed are usually some version of:
- Frequent journeys of less than about 10 miles
- Extended idling or stop-start traffic
- Towing or carrying heavy loads
- Cold climates, or sustained very hot ones
- Dusty conditions
Read that list as a Birmingham driver and the conclusion is uncomfortable: the school run, the commute inside the ring road and the trip to the supermarket are severe service. Not because they are demanding, but because the engine never reaches and holds full operating temperature, which is the condition oil copes with worst.
The word “severe” does the damage. It sounds like it means towing a caravan across a desert. It actually means the opposite of a long steady motorway run.
What is actually happening to the oil
Five things degrade it, and knowing them explains every interval on this page.
The additive package depletes. Fresh oil carries detergents to hold soot in suspension, dispersants to stop it clumping, anti-wear additives, and alkaline compounds that neutralise the acids combustion produces. All of them are consumed. Once the alkaline reserve is gone the oil turns mildly acidic and starts attacking bearing surfaces rather than protecting them.
Fuel dilution. A cold engine runs a rich mixture and some of that unburnt fuel gets past the piston rings into the sump. Fuel in oil thins it and reduces its ability to hold a load-bearing film. On a long run the oil gets hot enough to boil most of it back off. On a five-mile trip it does not, so it accumulates.
Condensation. Burning fuel produces water vapour, and some condenses in the crankcase. It only evaporates once the oil is properly hot. Water plus soot plus heat is the recipe for sludge.
Soot loading, particularly on diesels. The detergents holding it in suspension have finite capacity, and once saturated the soot begins to agglomerate and abrade.
Viscosity shear. Multigrade oils rely on long-chain polymers that uncoil as they warm. Those chains break down under shear over time, and the oil gradually loses the “40” or “30” it was sold with.
Diesels have an extra reason to be strict
If your diesel has a particulate filter, every attempted regeneration injects extra fuel late in the cycle to raise exhaust temperature — and some of that fuel reaches the sump. City diesels attempt regenerations often and complete them rarely, because journeys end before the cycle finishes.
The result is fuel dilution accumulating faster than in almost any other use case. If the dipstick is reading above maximum and you have not added any oil, that is what you are looking at, and it needs dealing with rather than noting. There is more on that in the DPF warning light guide.
Is topping up the same as changing?
No, and it is worth being blunt about it. Topping up restores the level. It does nothing about the condition. Adding a litre of fresh oil to four litres of exhausted oil gives you five litres of slightly less exhausted oil.

What if the car decides for itself?
Many modern cars run a variable schedule and put a number on the dashboard instead of using a fixed interval. That is a genuine engineering system rather than a marketing one, but it was designed around a specific driving pattern, and if yours is not that pattern it will stretch the oil well past where it should be. Set that against what neglected oil costs. A turbocharger spins on a film of oil fed through a narrow gallery; restrict it with sludge and the bearing fails, usually taking the turbo with it. When should you call a garage?
Now if you cannot remember the last change, if the oil on the dipstick is black and watery rather than amber and slightly viscous, or if the level has risen without you adding any.
Before the anniversary if you are covering high mileage — 20,000 miles a year on a 10,000-mile interval means two changes, not one.
