A DPF light means the soot load in the diesel particulate filter has passed a threshold and the car has not managed to burn it off. Most of the time it is an instruction rather than a failure, and the instruction is: give the engine a proper run.

What actually works: twenty minutes of continuous driving at 50–60mph, holding a lower gear than usual so the revs sit around 2,500–3,000. That gets the exhaust system hot enough for long enough. A gentle pootle at 40mph in top gear will not do it.

Before you set off, check the oil level. If the dipstick reads above maximum and you have not added any, stop — that is diesel from repeated failed regenerations diluting the sump oil, and it needs dealing with before anything else.

If the car has already dropped into reduced power or limp mode, driving will not clear it. It needs a forced regeneration on diagnostic equipment.

What the filter does, and how it empties itself

The DPF traps soot so it does not reach the air. It fills up, and it has to be cleared out, which happens in one of two ways.

Passive regeneration happens by itself when the exhaust is naturally hot enough — broadly, sustained running above about 40mph. No warning, no drama, and if you do a decent run every week you may never see a DPF light in your life.

Active regeneration is the car’s fallback. The ECU injects extra fuel late in the combustion cycle purely to raise exhaust temperature to around 600°C and burn the filter clean. It needs ten to twenty minutes of continuous running to finish.

You can usually tell when an active regeneration is happening, and it is worth learning the signs:

  • The cooling fan runs hard, sometimes for a while after you stop
  • Idle speed is slightly higher than normal
  • Stop-start stops working
  • A hot, acrid smell from underneath the car
  • Fuel consumption noticeably worse for a few minutes

If you can, do not switch the engine off mid-regeneration. An interrupted cycle leaves the soot where it was and puts unburnt fuel in the sump. Two more minutes of driving is genuinely worth it.

Soot and ash are not the same thing

This is the part that explains why some filters can be saved and some cannot.

Soot burns off. That is what regeneration does, and a filter full of soot is a filter that simply needs a proper run.

Ash does not burn off, ever. Ash is the non-combustible residue left behind, and it comes mostly from the additive package in engine oil, plus normal engine wear. It accumulates permanently, filling the filter a little more with every mile the car covers.

Two consequences follow. First, it is why the correct low-SAPS oil matters so much on a DPF car — ordinary oil has a far higher ash content and will fill the filter years early. Second, it is why a filter that needs regenerating more and more often is eventually telling you something real: there is less and less space left for soot because ash has taken it. That point typically arrives well past 100,000 miles, and at that stage no amount of driving will fix it.

Forced regeneration, cleaning, or replacement

Forced (static) regeneration. Diagnostic equipment commands the engine to run a regeneration cycle on the ramp, under controlled conditions. This is the answer for a car that is too blocked to self-regenerate but not yet beyond saving. It is by a wide margin the cheapest intervention.

Off-car cleaning. The filter is removed and cleaned properly, which can shift ash as well as soot. It costs more than a forced regen and much less than a new filter, and it is worth asking about before accepting a replacement quote.

Replacement. The last resort, and expensive.

One thing specific to some PSA-group cars — Peugeot, Citroën and several related models — is an additive (Eolys) system. A fluid is dosed into the fuel to lower the temperature at which soot burns. If the additive tank is empty, the car physically cannot reach regeneration temperature and the filter will keep blocking no matter how you drive it. It is worth checking on those cars before assuming the filter is finished.

Do not have it removed

It gets offered, so it is worth being direct about it.

Since February 2014, a vehicle that was fitted with a DPF from new and no longer has one is an automatic MOT failure. Separately, it is an offence to use a vehicle that has been modified so it no longer meets the emissions standard it was type-approved to. And it is a modification your insurer is entitled to be told about, with the usual consequences if they were not.

Beyond the legal position, it does not address the reason the filter blocked. Something caused it — usually a driving pattern, sometimes a faulty sensor, a leaking injector or a failing EGR valve. Remove the filter and that cause is still there, quietly damaging something else.

The reason to act on the light early rather than late is the distance between the second row and the last one.

When should you call a garage?

Straight away if the oil level is above maximum, if the car is in limp mode, or if the DPF light is joined by the amber engine warning and reduced power.

After one proper run — twenty minutes, 50–60mph, lower gear — if the light is on by itself and the car is driving normally. If that clears it, you have done the job yourself for the price of some diesel. If it does not, do not keep repeating it.

Sooner rather than later if the light is becoming a regular event. A filter that needs help every few weeks is telling you something has changed, and that something is often a cheap sensor or a leaking injector rather than the filter itself.
