With only the amber ABS light on: yes, carefully. Your ordinary brakes are unaffected. What you lose is the anti-lock function, so in an emergency stop a wheel can lock — which lengthens the stopping distance on a slippery surface and, more importantly, means you cannot steer while it is locked. Drive as if you were in an older car without ABS, leave more room, and get it read within a few days.

With the ABS light and the red brake warning light on together: treat that as serious and stop. On most cars the same control unit also manages electronic brakeforce distribution, and losing that can send too much braking effort to the rear axle. A car that locks its rear wheels before its fronts under heavy braking can spin. That combination is not a “get it looked at next week” fault.

That right-hand column surprises people, and it is worth understanding why it is so long. All of those systems need to know how fast each wheel is turning, and they all read that from the same four wheel speed sensors. Lose one sensor and every system built on top of it switches itself off. That is also why the traction control and stability lights usually appear at the same moment — it is one fault, not three.

Why it is usually a wheel speed sensor

Each wheel has a sensor reading a toothed or magnetically encoded ring that turns with the hub. The control unit compares the four signals thousands of times a second; if one stops making sense, it shuts the system down and lights the lamp.

Realistic causes, roughly in order:

  • The sensor itself — contaminated with brake dust and road salt, or simply failed.
  • The wiring. The cable runs from the body to a part that moves up, down and side to side thousands of times a day. It chafes and it breaks internally, often at the flex point near the suspension. This is why a fault can appear only over bumps or only on full lock.
  • The reluctor or encoder ring — cracked, or rusted so badly the teeth are no longer readable.
  • The wheel bearing. On a lot of modern cars the magnetic encoder ring is built into the bearing’s seal, so a “wheel speed sensor” fault is genuinely a failing bearing. If there is also a hum that changes as you sway the car, that is the answer.
  • Low system voltage. A weak battery or a poor earth will set ABS codes along with several other unrelated ones. Check the charging system before spending anything on sensors.

One specific case worth knowing: if the light appeared immediately after a wheel bearing, hub or driveshaft was replaced, the encoder ring has very likely been fitted the wrong way round. It is magnetised on one face only, and it is an easy mistake to make.

The code names the corner, not the part

This is where money gets wasted. A fault code reading “front left wheel speed sensor, no signal” identifies which corner the control unit has lost contact with. It does not distinguish between the sensor, the ring, the wiring and the bearing — and those are four different repairs at four different prices.

Testing does distinguish them: comparing live wheel speed readings across all four corners while the car moves, checking sensor resistance and output, and wiggle-testing the loom at the flex point. It takes a few minutes and it is the difference between a £90 sensor and a £320 bearing, in whichever direction is true.

Worth adding that most cheap code readers cannot see the ABS module at all, because generic tools mostly read engine codes. A “no faults found” from a plug-in reader while an ABS light is clearly lit is not a contradiction — it is the reader’s limitation.

Is the ABS light the same as the brake warning light?

No, and telling them apart decides how worried to be. The amber ABS symbol is a circle with “ABS” inside it. The red brake warning is a circle with an exclamation mark, and it covers the handbrake, brake fluid level and system faults — that one has its own set of causes and a red light there with the handbrake released should stop you.

Will it fail an MOT?

Yes. On a car fitted with ABS, an illuminated ABS warning lamp is a failure in its own right, regardless of how well the car actually stops. So is a bulb that has been removed so the lamp cannot illuminate — the tester checks that it lights on ignition and then goes out.

Braking faults account for around 18% of MOT failures nationally, so this is well-trodden ground; the common failure categories are worth a look before a test rather than after.

Module failures do happen but they are the least common item on that list, and they are the most expensive. That gap is the argument for testing rather than replacing parts in ascending order of price.

When should you call a garage?

Stop driving and call if the red brake warning light is on with the ABS light, if the pedal feels different — soft, sinking, or needing more travel — or if the car has felt unstable under braking.

Within a few days if it is only the amber ABS light and the brakes otherwise feel entirely normal. Sooner if an MOT is due, because it will fail.
