Brake Warning Light On? Here’s What It Means
A brake warning light means one of four things, and which symbol you have tells you how worried to be:
- The handbrake is still on. Check this first — and if it will not release cleanly, see handbrake faults. It is the most common cause by a wide margin.
- Brake fluid is low — either from pad wear, or from a leak.
- A fault in the braking system detected by the car.
- An ABS fault, if it is the ABS symbol rather than the main brake warning.
A red brake warning light with the handbrake fully released should be treated as serious. Stop somewhere safe, check the fluid level, and do not continue if it is low.

Symbols vary between manufacturers. Your handbook will confirm which is which, and it is worth two minutes to know before you need it.
What each cause actually means
Handbrake not fully released
Electronic parking brakes sometimes fail to fully disengage, and cable handbrakes can stick with corrosion. If the light goes out when you cycle the handbrake fully on and off, that was it — though a handbrake that sticks is worth mentioning at your next service.
Low brake fluid
Two very different explanations, and telling them apart matters.
Pad wear causes a gradual, small drop. As pads wear thinner, the calliper pistons sit further out, and that extra volume comes from the reservoir. This is normal and expected — and it means your pads are getting low.
A leak causes a faster drop and is dangerous. Look for damp patches behind the wheels, on the inside of tyres, or under the pedal box. Brake fluid strips paint and feels slippery.
If you cannot see any leak and your pads are due, wear is the likely answer — but the only way to be sure is to have it inspected. Topping the fluid up and carrying on is not a fix, and if it is a leak, it is a dangerous non-fix.
ABS fault
ABS stops the wheels locking under emergency braking. If the ABS light is on, your normal brakes still work — you simply lose the anti-lock function, so a panic stop could lock a wheel and lengthen the distance or cost you steering control.
Usual causes are a dirty or failed wheel speed sensor, a damaged sensor ring, wiring damage, or low system voltage. Worth knowing: an illuminated ABS light is an MOT failure in its own right.

Brake pad wear sensor
Some cars have an electrical sensor in the pad that completes a circuit when material runs low. This is the electronic equivalent of the squealing wear indicator, and it means the same thing: pads are near the end.
What to do, right now
- Check the handbrake is fully off. Genuinely, first.
- Pull over safely if the red light stays on.
- Check the fluid reservoir — usually near the back of the engine bay on the driver’s side, with MIN and MAX marks.
- Test the pedal at a standstill. Firm and high, or soft and sinking? A sinking pedal plus a warning light means do not drive — see spongy brake pedal.
- Look for leaks behind each wheel and under the car.
- Decide. Fluid low or pedal soft — recovery. Everything normal and only the ABS light on — drive carefully to a garage.
Will it fail an MOT?
Yes. An illuminated brake system warning light or ABS warning light is a failure in its own right, regardless of how well the car stops. Clearing the code without fixing the cause does not help — it returns within a few driving cycles, and testers know the trick.

ABS faults specifically are worth diagnosing rather than guessing at. The light says the system has detected a problem; it does not say which sensor, and replacing sensors one at a time is an expensive way to find out.
When should you call a garage?
Immediately, without driving, if the red light is on with the handbrake released, if the fluid is below MIN, if the pedal is soft or sinking, or if both red and amber lights are showing.
Within a few days if only the ABS light is on and the brakes otherwise feel normal, or if a pad wear sensor has triggered.
