A metallic grinding noise when you brake almost always means the friction material on your brake pads has worn away completely, and the metal backing plate is now grinding directly against the brake disc.

This is not a noise to monitor for a few weeks. Every mile you drive is cutting grooves into the disc, and it changes the job from a pad replacement into a pad and disc replacement — roughly doubling the cost. Braking performance is also reduced, because bare metal on metal grips far worse than friction material.

Get it looked at within days, not weeks. If the grinding is accompanied by a pedal that feels different or the car pulling, treat it as urgent.

Grinding versus squealing — they mean different things

People often use the words interchangeably. Mechanically they are not the same, and the difference matters a great deal.

What else grinding can mean

Worn-out pads cause most of it, but not all:

  • A stone or grit trapped between pad and disc. Usually a sharper scraping that may come and go, and sometimes clears itself. If a noise appears suddenly after driving on a gritted or unmade road, this is worth considering.
  • Surface rust after standing. A car left for a week or two develops a light rust film on the discs. It produces a rasping noise for the first few stops and then scrubs off. Harmless.
  • A seized calliper. If one pad has been held against the disc constantly it wears out far sooner than its partner, so you can get grinding on one wheel with plenty of material left elsewhere. Often comes with pulling to one side and a hot wheel — see why a car pulls when braking.
  • A failed wheel bearing. This one is different: the noise is usually present while driving and changes with speed or cornering, rather than only when you brake.
  • Worn rear drum brakes. On cars with rear drums, worn shoes grind against the drum in much the same way.

How to narrow it down yourself

You will not diagnose it definitively from the driver’s seat, but you can gather useful information:

  • Only when braking, or all the time? Only when braking points to pads and discs. All the time, changing with speed, points to a bearing.
  • Front or rear? Left or right? Noise location narrows it considerably.
  • Does the steering wheel or pedal vibrate too? That suggests disc damage as well — see brake judder explained.
  • Is one wheel noticeably hotter after a drive? Careful, they get very hot. A single hot wheel suggests a binding calliper.
  • Look through the wheel spokes. On many cars you can see the outer pad against the disc. If you can see almost no friction material, or the disc has a pronounced lip at its outer edge, that confirms it.

Brakes are always done in axle pairs, never one side, because uneven braking across an axle is both dangerous and an MOT failure in its own right.

Can you still drive it?

Short distances, carefully, to get it to a garage — yes, in most cases. But understand what you are working with: braking performance is reduced, stopping distances are longer, and the damage is accumulating with every stop.

Stop driving and arrange recovery if the pedal has gone soft or travels much further than normal, if the car pulls sharply under braking, if there is a burning smell after a short drive, or if the brake warning light is on. Those combinations suggest something beyond worn pads.
