Brake Pads vs Brake Discs: What’s the Difference?
Brake pads are the replaceable friction blocks that get squeezed against the disc. Brake discs (also called rotors) are the metal plates bolted to each wheel hub that spin with the wheel.
The pad is the consumable — it is designed to wear away, and it is much softer than the disc. The disc wears too, but far more slowly. That is why pads are replaced roughly twice as often, and why a quote for “pads and discs” costs meaningfully more than one for pads alone.
How the two work together
Press the pedal and hydraulic pressure pushes pistons in the calliper, which clamps a pair of pads onto both faces of the spinning disc. Friction converts the car’s momentum into heat, the disc sheds that heat into the air, and the car slows.
Everything about the design follows from that. The disc is vented or drilled on many cars specifically to dissipate heat. The pad compound is chosen to grip consistently across a wide temperature range. And the pad is deliberately the softer of the two, because replacing a pad is easy and replacing a disc is not.

When do you need discs as well?
Four situations, and only the first is avoidable:
1. The pads were left too long. Once friction material runs out, the metal backing plate contacts the disc and cuts grooves into it. This is the most common reason people end up buying both, and it is entirely preventable by acting when brakes start squealing rather than waiting for them to grind.
2. The disc is below its minimum thickness. Every disc has a minimum stamped on it. Below that it cannot dissipate heat safely and can crack. Discs wear on both faces, so this arrives sooner than people expect.
3. Thickness variation, felt as judder. If the disc is not uniformly thick, the pads grip harder in some places than others and you feel a pulsing through the pedal or steering wheel. Loosely called warping, though it is usually uneven wear or pad material deposited unevenly. See brake judder explained.
4. Corrosion. Discs rust, particularly on cars that stand for long periods. Light surface rust scrubs off harmlessly, but deep pitting or corrosion at the disc’s outer edge weakens it. This is a genuine issue for cars used only at weekends, and it is a common MOT failure on otherwise low-mileage vehicles.
Do you have to replace discs when replacing pads?
No — and be a little wary of anyone who says you always do.
If the discs are within their minimum thickness, not badly scored, not corroded at the edges and not causing judder, new pads on existing discs is perfectly correct. The honest test is measurement, not policy. We measure disc thickness with a micrometer against the manufacturer’s figure and tell you the number.
What is not optional is replacing in axle pairs. Pads and discs are always done both sides of an axle together, because different friction levels left and right make the car unstable under heavy braking — and the MOT measures exactly that balance on a roller brake tester.
What about callipers, fluid and the rest?
Pads and discs are the wearing parts, but they are not the whole system:
- Callipers house the pistons that squeeze the pads. They seize with corrosion, which causes uneven wear and pulling to one side.
- Brake fluid transmits the pressure. It absorbs water over time, which lowers its boiling point — see when brake fluid should be changed.
- Flexible hoses perish and can collapse internally, acting as a one-way valve.
- Rear drums and shoes on some cars do the same job with different hardware.
Are expensive pads worth it?
Sometimes. Budget pads are usually a harder compound: they last reasonably well, but they can be noisier, produce more dust, and bite less progressively when cold. Better pads generally grip more consistently and are quieter.
What matters more than price is that the pad is correct for the vehicle and properly fitted, with shims in place and the calliper slide pins cleaned and greased. A premium pad fitted badly performs worse than a mid-range pad fitted well.
When should you call a garage?
Book a check if you hear squealing, if it has been over two years or 25,000 miles, or if you feel pulsing through the pedal. Come sooner for grinding, pulling, or a soft pedal.
Ask for the measurements. A garage should be able to tell you the remaining pad thickness in millimetres and the disc thickness against its minimum. That turns “you need discs” from an assertion into a fact you can check.
