Brake fluid should be changed roughly every two years, regardless of mileage. Some manufacturers specify three; check your handbook, but two years is the common interval and the safe default.

The reason it is time-based rather than mileage-based is the important part: brake fluid does not wear out from use. It absorbs water from the atmosphere, continuously, whether the car is driven or parked. A car doing 2,000 miles a year needs it changed on the same schedule as one doing 20,000.

It is among the cheapest jobs on a car — typically £45–£70 — and among the most commonly skipped.

Why water in the fluid matters

Brake fluid is hygroscopic: it actively draws in moisture through the flexible hoses, the seals and the reservoir cap. That is not a design flaw. It is deliberate — dispersed moisture is far less harmful than water pooling in one place inside a brake line, where it would corrode from the inside and freeze in winter.

The trade-off is that absorbed water lowers the fluid’s boiling point, and it does so significantly:

Braking converts momentum into heat, and that heat reaches the fluid at the calliper. Under heavy or repeated braking, contaminated fluid can boil — and vapour compresses where liquid does not. The pedal goes long and soft exactly when you need it most.

That is brake fade, and it is the single reason this interval exists.

The second reason: corrosion from the inside

Water in the system corrodes the components it sits in — steel brake lines, calliper pistons and bores, the master cylinder and the ABS modulator.

The ABS unit is the one worth knowing about. It contains fine passages and precise valves, and it is an expensive component to replace. Corrosion products from neglected fluid are a genuine cause of ABS failures, and it is a costly way to save on a fluid change.

How to tell if yours needs doing

The reliable test is moisture content, measured with a simple electronic tester or test strip that reads the water percentage directly. Above roughly 3% it should be changed. Any garage should be able to do this in a minute, and it is worth asking for the number rather than an opinion.

Rough visual guides, less reliable but useful:

  • Fresh fluid is clear to pale straw. Dark brown or black fluid is old.
  • Check your service records. If you cannot find a fluid change, assume it needs one.
  • Symptoms: a pedal that is firm normally but goes soft after sustained braking — down a long hill, or in heavy traffic — is the classic sign. See spongy brake pedal.

Colour alone is not conclusive: fluid can be dark from age and additives while still within acceptable moisture, or clear and badly contaminated. Measure it.

Which fluid does your car take?

Almost all modern cars use DOT 4 or DOT 5.1, and these are glycol-based and compatible with each other. The specification is usually printed on the reservoir cap.

One genuine warning: DOT 5 is silicone-based and is not compatible with DOT 4 or 5.1, despite the numbering implying an upgrade. Mixing them causes seal damage and brake failure. It is not a fluid you will meet on an ordinary road car, but the naming is genuinely dangerous and worth knowing.

Never top up with anything other than the specified type, and never use fluid from a container that has been open for a long time — it will have absorbed moisture sitting on the shelf.

What the job involves

Not simply draining and refilling. Old fluid is pushed out through the bleed nipple at each corner in the correct sequence, until clean fluid runs through, with the reservoir kept topped so no air is drawn in.

Cars with ABS may need the pump cycled with diagnostic equipment to flush fluid trapped inside the modulator — otherwise old fluid stays in the unit that is most vulnerable to it. It takes around 45 minutes.

Is it in a service?

Usually only in a major service, not an interim or a full one. That is precisely why it gets missed — people have their car serviced faithfully every year and still go a decade without a fluid change, because their service level never included it.

Does the MOT check it?

Only partially, and this is a common misunderstanding. The MOT checks the fluid level and measures overall braking performance — it does not test the fluid’s moisture content or condition.

So a car can pass its MOT with brake fluid that will fade badly on the first long descent, because a roller brake tester applies the brakes briefly and cold. Passing an MOT tells you nothing about your fluid.

When should you call a garage?

Book a change if it has been two years or more, if you have no record of one, if the fluid is dark, or if the pedal softens after sustained braking.
