A car that pulls to one side under braking is telling you that one wheel is braking harder than the other on the same axle. The car pulls towards the side that is gripping more.

Causes, most to least common

1. Sticking or seized calliper

Corrosion in the slide pins or the piston bore stops the calliper releasing fully or applying evenly. Road salt makes this common in the UK.

Signs beyond the pull: one wheel noticeably hotter than the others after a drive (careful — they get very hot), a burning smell, uneven pad wear between inner and outer, fuel economy dropping, or the car feeling like it is being held back.

2. Collapsed flexible brake hose

The rubber hose to each calliper degrades internally with age and heat. A hose can collapse and act as a one-way valve — letting pressure through to apply the brake but not letting it release. The symptom is a brake that drags after use and frees off when the system cools.

Easy to mistake for a seized calliper. The distinguishing test is that cracking the bleed nipple releases the trapped pressure and the wheel frees immediately.

3. Uneven pad wear or mismatched pads

If pads have been replaced on one side only, or two different compounds are fitted across an axle, they grip differently. This is exactly why brakes are always replaced in axle pairs.

4. Contaminated pad

Oil, grease or brake fluid on the friction surface destroys grip on that side. Common alongside a leaking calliper seal or a weeping driveshaft boot. A contaminated pad cannot be cleaned — it must be replaced, and the leak fixed first.

5. Scored or unevenly worn discs

Different friction surfaces left and right produce different braking force. Often accompanied by judder.

6. Suspension or steering wear

A worn ball joint, track rod end or bush allows geometry to shift under braking load, steering the car slightly. This one usually comes with knocking noises over bumps.

7. Tyres

Uneven pressures, mismatched tyres across an axle, or one tyre significantly more worn than its partner will all pull. Free to check, so check it first.

What you can check yourself

  1. Tyre pressures, cold, against the figure on the door pillar. Costs nothing and rules out the easiest cause.
  2. Tyre condition — are both tyres on that axle the same make, model and roughly the same wear?
  3. Wheel temperature after a drive with moderate braking. Hold your hand near — do not touch — each wheel. One markedly hotter points to a dragging brake.
  4. Smell. A hot metallic or burning smell from one corner is a dragging brake.
  5. Does it pull constantly or only under braking? The single most useful thing you can tell a garage.
  6. Coast test, somewhere safe and quiet: does it pull with no braking at all? That points away from brakes.
