Car Repair in Solihull
About eight miles from B91 to B93. Air suspension, diagnostics and servicing — and a straight answer about what is worth the trip.
Car repair and maintenance for Solihull drivers
Solihull is B91 to B93 and is its own metropolitan borough — not part of Birmingham, and we should be straightforward about that. Our workshop is in Birmingham city centre, roughly eight miles away. There are garages closer to you than we are, so this page is less about convenience and more about whether the trip is worth making for the particular thing you need.
The local vehicle population has a character of its own. The Land Rover plant at Lode Lane has been building vehicles in Solihull since the 1940s, and the concentration of Range Rovers, Discoverys, Defenders and Jaguars around the borough is noticeably higher than anywhere else in the West Midlands. Add M42 corridor commuting and generally newer stock, and the work that comes to us from Solihull looks different from the work that comes from Nechells.
Getting to us from Solihull
About eight miles. The usual route is the A41 Warwick Road in through Acocks Green and Tyseley, or the A45 Coventry Road if you are on that side of the borough. Realistically that is twenty-five to thirty minutes off-peak and closer to forty-five in the morning peak, when both roads are carrying commuter traffic in the direction you are going.
Book rather than turning up. At that distance, a wasted journey is most of a morning, and a booked slot means the car goes straight in.
Clean Air Zone: Solihull is well outside the zone, and we are inside it. If your vehicle is non-compliant — broadly petrol older than Euro 4 or diesel older than Euro 6 — the daily charge applies for the journey to us. Most vehicles in this area are newer than that and pay nothing, but check the registration on Birmingham City Council’s checker if yours is older.
Common car problems for Solihull vehicles
Air suspension. Overwhelmingly the most common significant fault we see on vehicles from this area, and the one where acting early saves the most money. It has its own section below.
Faults that need live data rather than a code reader. On a vehicle with twenty or more control units talking to each other, a fault code names a symptom, not a cause. A low battery voltage alone will scatter unrelated codes across the engine, gearbox, suspension and chassis systems at once, and chasing them individually is expensive and gets nowhere. What matters is testing, not reading.
Heavy vehicles wearing heavy-vehicle parts. A large 4×4 is carrying two-and-a-half tonnes through the same bushes, brakes and tyres a family hatchback uses in miniature. Brake and suspension components on these vehicles wear faster and cost more, and it is worth budgeting for that rather than being surprised by it.
Air suspension: fix the leak before it costs you the compressor
Air suspension replaces the coil springs with rubber air springs, inflated and deflated by an onboard compressor through a valve block, with height sensors at each corner telling the system where the vehicle is sitting. It rides beautifully and it lets the vehicle raise and lower itself, which is most of why it exists.
The wear item is the air spring itself. It is a rubber bellows that flexes every time the wheel moves, and after several years and a lot of cycles it perishes and starts to leak. The first sign is almost always the same and almost always ignored: the vehicle sits down on one corner overnight and pumps itself back up when you start it.
Here is why that matters far more than it appears to. The system does not know it has a leak — it only knows the corner is low, so it runs the compressor to correct it. A small leak means the compressor runs a little more. A worse leak means it runs constantly, all night if it has to, well beyond the duty cycle it was designed for. Compressors are not cheap, and they fail from overwork, not from age.
So the sequence is this: an air spring leaks, and if it is left, the compressor burns out trying to compensate. The cheap repair, done promptly, prevents the expensive one. A vehicle that has been sinking overnight for six months frequently needs both, and the second part need never have been bought.
Two related notes. If the vehicle drops into its lowest setting and refuses to raise, do not keep driving it — running on the bump stops damages more than the suspension. And when one air spring has perished from age, the others are the same age and have done the same cycles, so it is worth asking what the rest look like rather than fixing one corner at a time across three separate visits.
What we will and will not take on
We would rather be useful about this than pretend otherwise.
Servicing, brakes, suspension, air suspension, exhausts, cooling systems, diagnostics and MOT work on these vehicles are all ordinary independent garage work, and doing them here rather than at a franchised dealer generally costs considerably less for the same result.
Some things genuinely need manufacturer-level equipment: certain module replacements that require coding to the vehicle, key programming, some driver-assistance camera and radar calibrations, and warranty or recall work, which has to go to a franchised dealer by definition. If what you need falls into that group, we will tell you at the point you ring rather than after we have had the vehicle for a day. Being clear about the edge of what we do is worth more to you than a confident answer that turns out to be wrong.
Why Solihull drivers use us
We are open seven days a week, 08:00 to 17:00, we agree the price before we start, and we test before we replace rather than fitting parts to see what happens.
At eight miles, come to us for the work that justifies the trip — a diagnosis somebody else has not got to the bottom of, air suspension, or servicing you would otherwise be paying dealer rates for. Ring us with the registration and what the vehicle is doing, and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth your morning.
We also cover car repair in Acocks Green and Yardley on the way in.

Frequently asked questions
My Range Rover sits down on one corner overnight. What is that?
A leaking air spring, almost certainly. The rubber bellows flexes every time the wheel moves and eventually perishes, so the corner deflates while the vehicle is parked and the compressor pumps it back up when you start it. It is the earliest and clearest warning the system gives, and it is the point at which the repair is still cheap.
Can I leave an air suspension leak if the car still drives normally?
It is the most expensive thing you can do with it. The system does not know there is a leak — it only knows a corner is low, so it runs the compressor to correct it, for as long as that takes. A worsening leak means a compressor running far beyond its intended duty cycle until it burns out. The cheap repair done promptly prevents the expensive one. Vehicles that have been sinking for months often need both.
Can an independent garage work on a Land Rover or a Jaguar?
For most of what these vehicles need, yes — servicing, brakes, suspension including air suspension, exhausts, cooling, diagnostics and MOT work are all ordinary independent garage work, usually at considerably less than dealer rates. Some things genuinely are not: module replacements needing coding to the vehicle, key programming, certain camera and radar calibrations, and anything under warranty or recall. We will tell you which yours is when you ring.
Why come eight miles to you when there are garages in Solihull?
For most routine work, there is no strong reason to — and we would rather say so. The trip makes sense for something specific: a fault somebody else has not got to the bottom of, air suspension work, or servicing you are currently paying dealer rates for. Ring us with the registration and what the vehicle is doing and we will give you an honest answer about whether it is worth your morning.
Does the Clean Air Zone charge apply coming from Solihull?
Only if your vehicle is non-compliant, which broadly means a petrol older than Euro 4 or a diesel older than Euro 6. Solihull is a long way outside the zone and we are inside it, so the daily charge applies to the journey in. Most vehicles in this area are newer than that and pay nothing. Check the registration on Birmingham City Council's checker if yours is older.
