What is an air conditioning regas?
Car air conditioning is a sealed loop. A belt-driven compressor pressurises refrigerant, the condenser at the front of the car sheds its heat, an expansion valve drops the pressure, and the refrigerant boils in the evaporator behind the dashboard — absorbing heat from the air being blown into the cabin. A receiver-drier removes moisture from the system.
A regas means recovering what is left, pulling the system into a deep vacuum, checking it holds that vacuum, and recharging with the correct refrigerant by weight along with the right quantity and grade of compressor oil.
Two refrigerants are in use, they are not interchangeable, and which one your car takes makes a substantial difference to the price. R134a is fitted to most cars up to around 2017. R1234yf replaced it on newer vehicles and costs considerably more per kilogram. They need separate equipment.
One thing worth being clear about: a regas is not a repair. If the system is empty because it leaks, refilling it simply vents the new charge to atmosphere over the following weeks. That is why we test before we fill.
Signs your air conditioning needs attention
- It is not as cold as it used to be, or takes much longer to cool the car
- It blows cold at speed but not in traffic, or the reverse
- A musty or damp smell when you first switch it on
- The compressor is not engaging — no change in engine note or idle when you press the button
- Noise — rattling or grinding when the air conditioning is on
- Windows misting and taking a long time to clear, which is an air conditioning symptom even in winter
- Visible oily residue around a pipe union or the condenser — refrigerant carries oil, so a leak often leaves a trace
Why does air conditioning stop working?
Gradual permeation. Even a perfectly healthy system loses refrigerant slowly through hoses and seals — commonly quoted at around 10% a year. That alone means a car more than a few years old will be noticeably less cold than it was, with nothing wrong.
Leaks. The condenser sits at the very front of the car, ahead of the radiator, and takes stones and road debris. Pipe unions and shaft seals leak as O-rings age.
Not using it. The compressor is lubricated by oil circulating with the refrigerant. Leave the system off for months and the seals dry out, which causes leaks, which causes a low charge — and low refrigerant means low oil circulation, which is what destroys compressors. Running the air conditioning for ten minutes every couple of weeks, in winter as well as summer, genuinely prolongs its life.
A blocked cabin filter. The single most common cause of “weak” air conditioning, and among the cheapest to fix. It restricts airflow, so the air is cold but there is not enough of it.
A blocked condenser, packed with leaves, insects and road grime so it cannot shed heat.
Microbial growth on the evaporator, which is what produces the musty smell — a damp, dark surface in a warm car is an ideal environment for it.
What we do — our air conditioning process
- Check before charging. Compressor engagement, system pressures, cabin filter condition and condenser airflow. Sometimes the answer is a £25 filter rather than a regas.
- Recover and weigh what comes out. How much refrigerant was actually in there tells you whether this is normal permeation or a genuine leak.
- Deep vacuum and hold test. This is the step that matters. Pulling the system into vacuum boils off moisture, and then watching whether it holds that vacuum is the real leak test. A system that will not hold vacuum will not hold refrigerant either, and we will tell you before filling it rather than after.
- Leak trace where needed, with UV dye or an electronic detector, so you know where the loss is and what fixing it involves.
- Recharge by weight to the manufacturer’s specification — printed on a label under the bonnet — with the correct grade and quantity of compressor oil. Charging by pressure rather than weight is guesswork.
- Performance test. Measure the vent temperature and confirm the system cycles correctly.

The gap between the two regas rows is entirely the cost of the refrigerant itself. It is not a different job — R1234yf is simply a far more expensive gas.
How long does it take?
A regas including the vacuum hold test is 45–90 minutes and comfortably a wait-while-you-do-it job. A cabin filter is usually ten minutes on top. Leak tracing may need the car back after a period of running with dye in the system. Condenser or compressor replacement is half a day.
What happens if you delay it?
The expensive failure is the compressor, and low refrigerant is what causes it. Because the lubricating oil circulates with the refrigerant, a system running low is a compressor running dry. It will work, sound fine, and then seize — and a seizing compressor can shed metal debris through the whole system, which means the condenser, drier and expansion valve need replacing alongside it. That is the difference between a £70 regas and a job well into four figures.
There is a safety angle people forget. Air conditioning dehumidifies as well as cools, which is why it clears a misted windscreen far faster than heat alone. A car with no working air conditioning is a car that demists slowly on a wet winter morning, and a windscreen you cannot see through properly is an MOT issue and a genuine hazard.
And the musty smell is not merely unpleasant — it is microbial growth on a surface that the air you breathe passes over.

City driving is unusually hard on the part of the system most people never think about: the air going in.
A car in stop-start traffic is drawing air that has just come out of the vehicle in front. Urban air carries a heavy load of particulates, brake dust and pollen, and all of it collects in the cabin filter. In a city-centre commute that filter loads up far faster than the annual service interval assumes — and a restricted filter is the most common reason air conditioning feels weak while the refrigerant charge is perfectly fine.
It is worth knowing that the recirculation button helps here: using it in heavy traffic keeps the worst of the outside air out of the cabin. Leave it on permanently, though, and humidity builds inside the car, which contributes to both misting and the damp smell.
Two habits that cost nothing:
Run the air conditioning for ten minutes every couple of weeks, all year round. It keeps the compressor seals lubricated, and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to avoid a compressor bill.
Change the cabin filter annually if your driving is mostly urban, rather than waiting for it to be listed on a major service. It improves cooling, demisting and the air you are actually breathing, and it is one of the least expensive items on the car.
