Car Air Con Not Blowing Cold? Causes and Fixes
“Not cold” is five or six different faults, and the pattern tells you which one you have before anybody connects a machine to the car.
Start by separating two things that feel identical from the driver’s seat:
- The air is cold but there is not enough of it — that is airflow, and it is usually a blocked cabin filter. Cheapest fix on this page
- Plenty of air but it is not cold — that is the refrigeration circuit, and the rest of this page is about narrowing it down
Hold your hand at the vent. If the flow is weak on maximum fan, stop reading and check the filter first.
The pattern names the fault

Two of those rows are worth expanding, because they are the ones most often misdiagnosed as “it needs a regas”.
The pressure switch lockout
This one causes a lot of unnecessary electrical diagnosis.
If the compressor is not engaging at all — no click, no change in engine note when you press the button — the instinct is to look for an electrical fault. Usually there is not one.
The system has a low-pressure switch that deliberately prevents the compressor running when refrigerant is low, and it does that because the lubricating oil circulates with the refrigerant. A compressor running on a low charge is a compressor running dry, and it would destroy itself in short order. So the car locks it out to protect it.
The practical meaning: “the compressor won’t come on” is far more often a refrigerant problem than an electrical one. It is also the system doing exactly what it should. Working out why the charge is low is the actual job.
Cold at speed, warm in traffic
A very specific symptom with a very specific cause, and it is not refrigerant.
The condenser sits at the front of the car and has to shed heat into passing air. At road speed there is plenty of airflow through it and the system copes. At a standstill there is none, so everything depends on the cooling fan.
So this pattern points at one of two things: a condenser blocked with leaves, insects and road grime so it cannot shed heat, or a cooling fan not running when the air conditioning is on. Both are cheap compared with anything involving refrigerant, and the condenser can often simply be cleaned.
Worth checking yourself: with the engine running, air conditioning on and the car stationary, you should hear or see the fan running. If the car also runs warm in traffic with the air conditioning off, that is a cooling system issue and it outranks the air conditioning entirely — a rising temperature gauge is the thing to act on first.
Cold, then gradually warm
Ten or twenty minutes of proper cold air, then it fades, and after the car has been switched off for a while it works again. That is evaporator icing.
The evaporator behind the dashboard gets cold enough to condense moisture out of the cabin air — which is how air conditioning demists a windscreen. If the charge is low or an expansion valve is misbehaving, the evaporator runs colder than intended and that condensation freezes on it. A block of ice is an excellent insulator, so airflow across it stops picking up any cooling. Switch off, the ice melts, and the cycle repeats.
It is a symptom of an underlying fault rather than a fault in itself, and the usual underlying fault is a low charge.
Five minutes of checks you can do
- Airflow on maximum fan. Weak means the cabin filter, and that is a £25–£60 part often reachable behind the glovebox
- Listen for the compressor. With the engine idling, press the A/C button and listen for a distinct click and a small change in idle. No click points at the lockout above
- Look through the front grille. If the condenser is packed with leaves and flies, that is your traffic problem
- Check the fan runs with the air conditioning on and the car stationary
- Check the setting. On many cars the compressor will not engage if the temperature is set to full cold with the fan off, or if ECO mode is disabling it. On a few, it will not run below a certain outside temperature
What not to do: a supermarket top-up can. They fill a system without knowing what came out, they cannot remove moisture, and if there is a leak they simply vent the new charge to atmosphere over a few weeks — while making the eventual proper diagnosis harder.
How cold should it actually be?
Colder than most people expect. A healthy system should deliver vent air roughly 15 to 20°C below the outside temperature once the car has settled — so on a 25°C day, air at the centre vent somewhere in single figures.
Measure it properly if you want a real number: a cheap thermometer in the centre vent, engine warm, fan on a middle setting, doors shut, after five minutes of running. Judging by hand after thirty seconds with the doors open tells you nothing.
To get cold fastest: open the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the superheated air, then close them and switch to recirculation. Recirculating cabin air that is already partly cooled is far more efficient than repeatedly cooling hot outside air. Switch back to fresh air once you are comfortable, though, or humidity builds up inside the car and brings the misting and the damp smell with it.
Is a regas the answer?
Sometimes, and it is worth knowing when.
Yes, probably, if the car is several years old and has simply become gradually less cold with no other symptom. Sealed systems lose refrigerant slowly through hoses and seals as a matter of course, and that is normal permeation rather than a fault.
Probably not, if it stopped working suddenly, if it was regassed within the last year or two, or if there is oily residue anywhere around the pipes and condenser. Refrigerant carries oil, so a leak usually leaves a trace — and refilling a leaking system just vents the new charge over the following weeks.
The step that separates the two is a vacuum hold test: pull the system into a deep vacuum and see whether it holds. A system that will not hold vacuum will not hold refrigerant, and that check belongs before the fill rather than after it.

The gap between the two regas rows is the refrigerant itself, not the labour — R1234yf, fitted to most cars from around 2017, is simply a far more expensive gas. The label under your bonnet says which type your car takes.
Why it is the cabin filter so often here
City driving is unusually hard on the air going into the car, and that is the part nobody thinks about.
A car in stop-start traffic is breathing air that has just left the exhaust of the vehicle in front, loaded with particulates, brake dust and pollen from street trees. On a commute along the Coventry Road or round the Middleway, a cabin filter loads up considerably faster than the annual service interval assumes.
So the most common reason air conditioning “stops working” in Birmingham is not refrigerant at all — it is that there is cold air being produced and not enough of it reaching you. It is also the cheapest thing on the car to put right, and it improves demisting and the air you are actually breathing at the same time.
If your driving is mostly urban, change it annually rather than waiting for it to appear on a major service.
When should you call a garage?
Switch it off and ring if there is a rattle or grinding when the air conditioning is on. A seizing compressor can shed metal debris through the whole system, which turns a regas into a bill well into four figures.
Book a check rather than a regas if it stopped suddenly, or was regassed recently. Paying £59 to refill a leak is the most common wasted money on this subject.
Just book the regas if it is a several-year-old car that has faded gradually with no other symptom. That is what permeation looks like.
Do not ignore it in winter. Air conditioning is what clears a misted screen quickly, and a system left switched off for months dries out its compressor seals — which causes the leak that causes the low charge that destroys the compressor. Ten minutes every couple of weeks, all year round.
