Car Overheating: What to Do Immediately
If the temperature gauge is in the red or a red coolant warning has appeared, do this in order:
- Turn the heater to maximum heat and the fan to maximum. It is deeply counter-intuitive on a hot day and it genuinely works — the heater matrix is a second radiator, and running it pulls real heat out of the engine.
- Switch the air conditioning off.
- If you are stuck in traffic, put it in neutral and hold around 2,000rpm for a minute — it moves coolant and air faster than idling does. If you are moving, pull over as soon as it is safe.
- Stop and switch the engine off.
- Do not open the expansion tank or radiator cap. Not to check, not to top up, not at all until the engine has been off for at least half an hour. This is the part that hurts people.
- Do not carry on to get home. The distance between “expensive” and “written off” is often about five miles.
Why the cap is genuinely dangerous
A cooling system is deliberately pressurised, usually to somewhere between 1.1 and 1.5 bar. That pressure raises the boiling point of the coolant from around 100°C to roughly 120–130°C, which is the only reason an engine can run at the temperature it does without boiling.
An overheating engine is full of coolant that is above its atmospheric boiling point and is only staying liquid because of that pressure. Release the cap and the whole lot flashes to steam instantly and comes out of the opening. It is one of the more common serious scald injuries in home car maintenance, and it is entirely avoidable by waiting.
If there is steam coming from the bonnet, stand back and leave it. Steam means the coolant is already boiling.
Why it overheated

The most useful question: when does it overheat?
This narrows it down faster than anything else, and it costs nothing to answer.
Overheats in slow traffic, fine on the move. Airflow through the radiator is doing the job at speed and the fan is not doing it at a standstill. Look at the fan, its relay and the temperature sensor that triggers it.
Overheats at speed or under load, fine in traffic. The opposite — there is plenty of airflow but not enough coolant flow or capacity. Suspect the thermostat, the water pump, a blocked radiator, or a low level.
Overheats within a few minutes of a cold start. Almost always a thermostat stuck shut, or so little coolant left that there is nothing to circulate.
Temperature swings up and down. Air in the system, or a thermostat opening and closing erratically.
Tell a garage which of those four you have and you have done a meaningful part of the diagnosis yourself.
What overheating actually damages
Modern engines have aluminium cylinder heads on iron or aluminium blocks, and aluminium expands considerably when it gets hot. Push it far enough past design temperature and the head distorts.
What follows, in rough order of severity: the head gasket fails, which lets coolant into the cylinders or combustion gases into the coolant. The head warps, and needs skimming or replacing. In bad cases the head or block cracks. If it is run beyond that, pistons pick up in the bores and the engine seizes.
The reason “just getting home” is such a costly instinct is that the first stage is often survivable and the last is not. An engine stopped promptly frequently needs a thermostat. The same engine driven another ten miles needs a cylinder head.
Can I top it up with water?
In an emergency, to get somewhere sensible — yes, once the engine has genuinely cooled. Two rules: never pour cold water into a hot engine, because thermal shock cracks cylinder heads, and add it slowly with the engine cool and the cap safely removed.
It is a get-you-home measure, not a fix. Water dilutes the antifreeze and, more importantly, the corrosion inhibitor, which is what stops the inside of your engine and radiator quietly rotting. Have the system drained, flushed and refilled with the correct specification coolant afterwards — and find out where it went, because coolant does not evaporate.

Look at the top and the bottom of that table together. That gap is the whole argument for stopping when the gauge first moves.
When should you call a garage?
Do not drive it. This is one of the few faults where recovery is genuinely cheaper than driving, because the damage accumulates by the mile.
Ring us and describe four things: when it overheats (traffic, speed, or from cold), whether you can see or smell coolant, whether any other warning light came on with it, and whether there is white smoke from the exhaust. Those four answers usually identify the area before we see the car.
