Engine noises range from a £50 job to a scrapped engine, and you can narrow yours down a long way by listening carefully to two things: what it sounds like, and what makes it change.

The question that sorts most of it out

Before anything else, work out what the noise follows. Get somewhere safe, put the car in neutral and raise the revs.

If the noise speeds up with the engine, it is the engine or something the engine drives. If it stays the same while the engine revs but changes when you drive faster, it is wheels, bearings, driveshafts or tyres. If it only happens over bumps and ignores both, it is suspension.

That single test rules out roughly two-thirds of the possibilities in about a minute, and it is the first thing worth telling us on the phone.

The serious one: bottom-end knock

This is the noise that decides whether you have a repair or a replacement, so it is worth describing precisely.

It is deep rather than tinny — more of a thud than a rattle. It is rhythmic, tracking engine speed exactly. It is usually present at idle and gets louder and faster as revs rise. It is often worst under load, pulling away or going uphill. Some people describe it as a heavy tapping from low down in the engine, others as a hammering.

The mechanism: each connecting rod runs on the crankshaft through a bearing shell, separated by a film of pressurised oil a few microns thick. Metal never touches metal. Lose that oil film — through low level, a worn pump, a pickup strainer blocked with sludge, or oil so degraded it no longer holds pressure at temperature — and the shell wears. As the clearance opens up, the rod starts to hammer against the crank journal on every cycle.

By the time you can hear it, the bearing is already damaged. That matters because of what happens next: continued running turns a bearing job into a scored crankshaft, and a scored crankshaft usually means a replacement engine. The difference between stopping now and driving another fifty miles is frequently the difference between four figures and “not worth repairing”.

If your noise matches that description, do not drive to the garage. Have it recovered.

The others, and what they actually mean

Pinking or detonation

A light, sharp metallic rattle that appears only when the engine is working — accelerating, climbing, or labouring in too high a gear — and vanishes the moment you lift off. It is the fuel-air mixture igniting unevenly ahead of the spark, and the shockwaves are what you hear.

Causes are cheap fuel or the wrong octane, carbon build-up in the combustion chambers, ignition timing, a failing knock sensor, or an engine running hot. It is not going to strand you today, but sustained detonation damages pistons over time, and it is a common reason for the engine management warning to appear.

Hydraulic tappets

A fast, light tapping from the top of the engine, loudest in the first thirty seconds from cold and usually quieter once warm. Hydraulic lifters take up valve clearance using oil pressure, and they get noisy when the oil is too thin, too old, too low, or the wrong grade. On a good many cars the first thing to try is genuinely an oil and filter change with the correct specification oil.

Timing chain rattle on start-up

One or two seconds of rattle when you first turn the key, then silence. The chain tensioner is hydraulic and bleeds down overnight, so the chain is momentarily slack until oil pressure builds. Left alone it gets longer, and a chain that jumps a tooth causes very expensive damage. This is a book-it-in, not a wait-and-see.

Exhaust heat shield

A thin, tinny buzz that appears at one specific engine speed and disappears above and below it, often changing if you blip the throttle. Thin metal shields corrode and their fixings fail. It sounds far worse than it is, and it is one of the cheapest repairs on the car.

Why the scanner will not find it

Worth saying plainly: most mechanical noises set no fault code at all. The ECU has no sensor for a worn bearing, a stretched chain or a loose heat shield. Knock sensors detect detonation, not mechanical knock, and they are listening for a very specific frequency signature.

So “I had it plugged in and there were no faults” tells you almost nothing here. This is diagnosed by listening — with a stethoscope, at each cylinder, hot and cold, at idle and under load — and by checking oil pressure and condition. It is one of the areas where a fault code is genuinely no substitute for testing.

When should you call a garage?

Stop and have it recovered if the knock is deep and rhythmic, present at idle, and follows engine speed — particularly if the oil warning light has been on at any point, or if the car has recently overheated, since both are common precursors.

Drive gently and book it in for a start-up rattle, a cold tapping, or pinking under load.

No rush for a tinny buzz at one rpm — but mention it, because it is cheap to sort and it masks other noises while it is there.
