Engine Management Light On? What to Do
What you do next depends entirely on how the light is behaving:
- Steady amber, car driving normally. A fault is stored. The car is usually safe to drive. Get it read within a few days.
- Flashing amber (red on some cars). Stop as soon as it is safe. A flashing light almost always means a serious misfire, which is pumping unburnt fuel into a catalytic converter hot enough to destroy it in minutes. Continuing can turn a £150 repair into a four-figure one.
- Light on plus reduced power — the engine will not rev past about 3,000rpm. That is limp mode, and it means the ECU has decided something needs protecting.
- Light on plus a temperature gauge climbing, an oil pressure light, or a new noise. Stop and switch off. The engine light is the least of those three.
Steady or flashing matters more than anything else
It is the single most useful thing on this page and almost nobody is told it.
A steady light says the engine control unit has logged a fault that affects emissions. It has usually already compensated for it. Fuel economy may be slightly worse and the car may feel marginally flat, but nothing is being damaged in the next fifty miles.
A flashing light says damage is happening right now. The trigger is nearly always a misfire severe enough that raw fuel is passing into the exhaust. A catalytic converter runs at 400–800°C in normal use; unburnt fuel igniting inside it takes it far beyond that, and the ceramic substrate melts. Once it has melted it also blocks, and a blocked cat will strangle the engine.
If it is flashing: pull over, switch off, and do not drive it to the garage “because it is only two miles”. Two miles is enough.
What the light actually is
It is called the MIL — Malfunction Indicator Lamp — and it is legally required on every petrol car sold in the UK since 2001 and every diesel since 2004. It is not a general “something is wrong with your car” warning. It is specifically the emissions system warning.
That single fact explains why it covers such an enormous range of faults. The engine’s emissions performance depends on the air going in, the fuel going in, the spark, the exhaust gases coming out and the sensors measuring all of it. Anything that upsets any of that sets the light. It also explains what the light does not cover — a worn clutch, a failing wheel bearing, a noisy suspension or a slipping gearbox will not touch it.
The lamp is also self-testing. It should illuminate when you turn the ignition on and go out shortly after the engine starts. A light that never comes on at all is a problem in itself — on a used car it can mean the bulb has been removed to hide a fault, and it is worth checking on any car you are about to buy.
Common causes, and what each usually feels like

Can I keep driving?
Steady light, car feels normal: yes, for a few days, while you get it looked at. Drive gently and avoid heavy loads or towing.

Flashing light: no.
The thing worth resisting is the middle ground, where the light has been on for six months and the car “seems fine”. A stored fault means the engine is running on a compensated map rather than its proper one. It is usually costing you fuel, and the original fault frequently goes on to damage something more expensive — a rich-running engine kills catalytic converters, and a small vacuum leak that costs £15 in hose becomes a £700 cat.
Will it fail an MOT?
Yes. Since May 2018 an illuminated engine management light is a major defect and an automatic MOT failure, regardless of how well the car drives or what its emissions actually measure.
Clearing the code the day before the test does not work reliably either. The fault returns within a few driving cycles, and it takes most of them to happen on the way to the test centre.

The spread is why the diagnosis is worth paying for. A fault code names a circuit, not a broken part, and the difference between a £15 vacuum hose and a £700 catalytic converter is entirely in the testing, not in the code number.
When should you call a garage?
Immediately, without driving, if the light is flashing, or if it appears alongside an overheating gauge, an oil pressure warning or a new mechanical noise.
Within a few days for a steady light, even if the car feels perfectly normal — and particularly before an MOT, because it will fail.
When you ring, tell us three things: whether the light is steady or flashing, whether the car feels any different, and roughly when it first appeared. Those three answers narrow it down a long way before the car arrives. The light came on right after I filled up. Is that a coincidence?
Possibly not. On a good many cars a loose, cross-threaded or perished fuel filler cap lets the evaporative emissions system detect a leak, and that sets the light. Re-seat the cap properly and drive a few journeys before spending any money. If it clears, that was it. If it does not, it needs reading like any other fault.
What does the engine management light not cover?
Anything outside the emissions system. It is formally the Malfunction Indicator Lamp and it monitors air in, fuel in, spark, exhaust gases out and the sensors measuring them. A worn clutch, a failing wheel bearing, noisy suspension, a slipping gearbox or a mechanical knock will not touch it. That is why a car with no warning lights is not the same thing as a car with no faults.
