Battery Warning Light: Battery or Alternator?
The battery symbol is not a battery warning. It is a charging system warning. It means the alternator has stopped keeping the vehicle electrical system supplied, so the car is now running off the battery alone — and it will stop running when the battery is empty.
Realistically that gives you 30 to 60 minutes with everything unnecessary switched off, and considerably less at night with headlights, wipers and heater running. Plan the next twenty minutes accordingly rather than the next twenty miles.
One thing takes priority over everything else on this page: if the battery light is on and the temperature gauge is climbing, stop as soon as it is safe. On a great many engines the same auxiliary belt drives both the alternator and the water pump. If that belt has snapped you have lost charging and coolant circulation at the same moment, and an overheating engine will do far more damage than a flat battery.
Why the symbol is misleading
The lamp is wired to compare system voltage against what the alternator should be producing. It illuminates when charging voltage falls below roughly 13 volts with the engine running — in other words, when the alternator is no longer doing its job.
A healthy system reads about 12.4–12.7 volts with the engine off and 13.8–14.4 volts with it running. If the running figure is not comfortably above the resting figure, nothing is being replaced as it is used.
So a genuinely dead battery on a car with a working alternator often does not light this lamp. It just fails to start in the morning. And a perfectly good battery on a car with a failed alternator lights it every time.
What to do in the next five minutes
- Switch off everything you do not need. Heated rear screen and heated seats first — they are the biggest consumers on the car after the starter. Then air conditioning, radio, interior lights, phone charging. Keep headlights and wipers if you need them to be safe; being visible is worth more than ten minutes of range.
- Watch the temperature gauge. This is the one that decides whether you keep going at all.
- Do not switch the engine off unless you are somewhere you are content to stay. With a charging fault it may well not restart.
- Head somewhere sensible and close. A garage, a car park, a friend’s driveway. Not a thirty-mile run home.
- Avoid the motorway. Stopping on a hard shoulder is a far worse outcome than stopping in a lay-by five minutes from now.
If the steering suddenly goes heavy or the engine cuts, coast to the side and stop. On a car with electric power steering, falling voltage takes the assistance with it.
Battery, alternator, or something cheaper?
There are four realistic answers and a couple of them cost almost nothing.
The auxiliary belt. Check it first, because it is free to look at and it is the one that also overheats the engine. A belt that is slipping rather than broken usually squeals on start-up, particularly on a damp morning. A belt that has gone will be visibly absent or hanging.
Battery terminals. Loose, or furred with white-green corrosion. A poor connection can produce exactly the same symptoms as a failed alternator and costs nothing to correct. Worth a look before anyone quotes you for parts.
The alternator. Either the unit itself or its voltage regulator. The classic tell is that the car jump-starts happily and then dies within a few minutes once the leads come off — because it was running on donated charge, not on its own.
The battery. The tell here is the opposite: it starts fine once jumped and keeps running all day, but is flat again the next morning. That is a battery that no longer holds charge, or something draining it while the car is parked.
The stop-start complication
If your car has engine stop-start, two extra things matter.
It will have an EFB or AGM battery, not a conventional one, because the duty cycle is completely different — the engine restarts dozens of times a journey and the battery alone runs everything in between. Fitting an ordinary lead-acid battery to save money reliably produces a failure within months.
On many makes the replacement also has to be registered to the battery management system. The BMS tapers charging to suit the ageing profile of the battery it thinks it has; fit a new one without telling it, and the new battery is chronically undercharged from day one.
There is a useful early warning in all this. When stop-start quietly stops engaging, that is normally the car deciding the battery’s state of charge is too low — months before it ever struggles to start.
Does it fail an MOT?
The battery charge warning is not one of the dashboard lamps the MOT specifically checks, unlike the engine management, ABS and airbag warnings. That is not much comfort: a car with a failing charging system may not survive being started, tested and moved around a test lane, and any electrical fault serious enough to dim the lights will show up elsewhere in the test.

Testing the battery and the charging system together is the point. A battery that keeps going flat is frequently a charging fault, and buying two batteries in a year is how people find that out the expensive way.
When should you call a garage?
Stop and call immediately if the temperature gauge is rising with the light on, if the steering has gone heavy, or if the engine is faltering.
Same day otherwise. This is not a warning to finish the week with — the failure mode is the car stopping wherever it happens to be, which is usually somewhere inconvenient and occasionally somewhere dangerous.
