What is brake repair?
Brake repair covers everything from replacing worn friction material to rebuilding a seized hydraulic system. On most cars most of the time it means pads and discs — the two parts that wear by design and are meant to be replaced.
The system itself is straightforward. You press the pedal, which pushes a piston in the master cylinder, which sends brake fluid down steel lines and flexible hoses to a calliper at each wheel. The calliper squeezes a pair of brake pads against a spinning disc (a rotor), and friction turns the car’s momentum into heat. Older and smaller cars may use drums and shoes at the rear instead. A servo uses engine vacuum to multiply the effort from your foot, and ABS releases and reapplies pressure many times a second to stop a wheel locking under emergency braking.
Almost every brake fault is one of four things: friction material worn out, a hydraulic leak or air in the system, a component seized by corrosion, or a disc that has warped or corroded unevenly.
Signs you need brake repair
Brakes give plenty of warning if you know what you are listening for.
- Squealing. Often the wear indicator — a small metal tab designed to touch the disc and make a noise when the pad gets low. It is doing its job. Book it in.
- Grinding. Different, and more urgent. Grinding usually means the friction material is gone and metal is contacting metal. Every mile from here is cutting grooves into the disc, turning a pad job into a pad and disc job.
- A spongy or soft pedal. Air in the lines or moisture in the fluid. The pedal travels further before anything happens.
- Pedal sinking slowly to the floor. A master cylinder or hydraulic leak. Treat as urgent.
- Judder or vibration through the pedal or wheel when braking. Usually disc thickness variation — commonly, though loosely, called warping.
- Pulling to one side. Often a sticking calliper on the opposite side, so one wheel brakes harder than the other.
- Longer stopping distances, or having to press noticeably harder for the same effect.
- The brake warning light. Depending on the car this means low fluid, worn pads, or a fault in the ABS or handbrake circuit.
- A burning smell after a run, particularly with one wheel hotter than the others — a binding calliper dragging constantly.
Grinding, a sinking pedal and a burning smell are the three that should stop you driving and get the car looked at now rather than at the weekend.
What causes brakes to wear out
Pads and discs are consumables — they are meant to wear. What varies enormously is how fast, and driving pattern matters far more than mileage.
Every time you slow down, the pads give up a little material. So what wears brakes is not distance travelled but the number of braking events and how hard each one is. A car that covers 12,000 motorway miles a year may brake a few dozen times a day. A car covering half that mileage in city traffic may brake a few hundred times a day.
Corrosion is the other big factor, and in the UK it is constant. Road salt attacks calliper slide pins and piston seals. A calliper that cannot slide freely leaves the pad in light contact with the disc permanently, which wears the pad unevenly, overheats the disc and costs you fuel. Cars that sit unused for long periods suffer worst — surface rust forms on the discs within days and, on a car left for weeks, pads can bond to the disc face.
Brake fluid is the quietly neglected one. It is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the atmosphere through the flexible hoses and seals. Water lowers the boiling point, so under heavy or repeated braking the fluid can boil, and vapour compresses where fluid does not. That is brake fade: the pedal goes long and soft exactly when you need it most. This is why DOT 4 fluid has a change interval measured in years regardless of mileage.
What we do — our brake repair process
- Road test, if it is safe. Symptoms like judder, pulling and noise tell us more in two minutes of driving than an hour on the ramp.
- Wheels off, full inspection. We measure remaining pad thickness and disc thickness against the manufacturer’s minimum, check discs for scoring, lipping and corrosion, and look for uneven wear between the inner and outer pad — the classic sign of a sticking calliper.
- Hydraulic check. Flexible hoses for perishing and bulging, steel lines for corrosion, callipers and cylinders for leaks, and a fluid test for moisture content.
- You get the price before we start. We tell you what needs doing now, what is getting close, and what can safely wait until next time. If your pads have 4mm left we will say so rather than sell you a set.
- The work. Pads and discs replaced in axle pairs — never one side only, because uneven braking across an axle is both dangerous and an MOT failure. Slide pins cleaned and greased with the correct high-temperature lubricant. Fitted torques set with a torque wrench, not by feel.
- Bleed and bed in. Where the hydraulic system has been opened, we bleed it properly. New pads and discs need bedding in to transfer an even layer of friction material, and we will tell you how to do it — a few hundred miles of moderate braking, avoiding hard stops from speed.
- Final road test before the car goes back to you.
How much does brake repair cost in Birmingham?

What moves the price: the vehicle, mostly. A supermini is at the bottom of these ranges and a large SUV or a performance model with big discs can sit well above them. Whether discs are needed alongside pads is the other big variable, and that often comes down to how long the noise was left. Rear brakes with an electronic parking brake need the calliper wound back electronically, which takes longer than a mechanical one.

How long does brake work take?
Pads on one axle take about an hour. Pads and discs on one axle, one to two hours. A fluid change is around 45 minutes. A seized calliper or a corroded brake line can take longer, and badly corroded fixings occasionally turn a straightforward job into a difficult one — we will tell you if that happens rather than quietly running over.
Most brake jobs are comfortably a wait-in-the-day job, and with seven-day opening you do not need to lose a working day for it.
What happens if you delay brake repair?
Brakes are the one system where delay changes the outcome rather than just the price — though it changes the price too.
The cost escalates in a predictable sequence. Worn pads caught early are a pad job. Left until they grind, the metal backing plate scores the disc and you are buying discs as well, roughly doubling the bill. Left further, a disc can wear below its minimum safe thickness or a seized calliper can overheat and destroy the hub bearing.
It is an MOT failure. Brakes account for around 18% of MOT failures. The test measures braking efficiency and the balance between wheels on a roller brake tester, so a sticking calliper fails even if the car feels fine to drive.
And it is the safety one. Everything else on a car that fails leaves you inconvenienced. Brakes that fade, pull or take longer to stop change what happens in the moment you need them. If you are reading this because something is grinding, please do not leave it another fortnight.
Brake repair for Birmingham drivers
If you drive inside the A4540 Middleway you should expect to replace pads considerably more often than the intervals in the handbook suggest, and there is nothing wrong with your car when you do.
The A38 Aston Expressway and the Middleway ring are stop-start for most of the day. That is a braking event every few hundred yards for miles at a time, and it is the pattern that wears friction material fastest. It is entirely normal for a Birmingham commuter to need front pads at around 20,000 miles where the same car doing rural or motorway miles would comfortably reach 40,000.
Traffic calming compounds it. The residential routes through Moseley, Kings Heath and Handsworth carry a lot of speed humps, and each one is a decelerate-and-accelerate cycle that a main road would not demand. Drivers who cut through those streets to avoid the main roads trade queueing time for brake wear.
Then there is standing water and salt. Birmingham’s winter gritting is thorough, which is good for traction and hard on callipers and brake lines. Cars that spend weekdays parked and only move at weekends are the most affected — surface corrosion forms on the discs between uses, and the first few stops each time scrub it off, accelerating disc wear over a season.
None of this is a reason for alarm. It is a reason to have brakes checked on time rather than on mileage, and to take a new noise seriously rather than assuming it will settle.

How long do brake pads last?
It depends far more on how you drive than how far. Pads wear per braking event, not per mile, so city driving inside the Middleway wears them roughly twice as fast as motorway miles. A Birmingham commuter often needs front pads around 20,000 miles where the same car doing rural miles reaches 40,000. There is nothing wrong with a car that needs pads at 20,000 here.
Do I need new discs as well as pads?
Not always. Discs have a manufacturer minimum thickness, and we measure against it rather than guessing. If the discs are within spec and not badly scored or lipped, pads alone are fine. If the pads were left until they ground, the backing plate will have scored the discs and both need replacing — which is why grinding is worth acting on quickly.
Why are my brakes squealing?
Most often the wear indicator, a small metal tab designed to contact the disc and squeal when the pad gets low. It is a warning working as intended. Squealing can also come from surface rust after the car has stood, or from dust and glazing. Grinding is a different and more urgent noise — that usually means the friction material has gone.
Can you replace brakes on just one wheel?
No. Brakes are always replaced in axle pairs. Uneven braking across an axle makes the car unstable under heavy braking and is an MOT failure in its own right, because the test measures the balance between the two wheels on a roller brake tester.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Typically every two years, regardless of mileage. Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the atmosphere through the seals and hoses. Water lowers the boiling point, so under repeated heavy braking the fluid can boil and the pedal goes soft. It is one of the cheapest jobs on a car and one of the most commonly skipped.
My car pulls to one side when I brake. What is it?
