Spongy Brake Pedal: Causes and Fixes
A spongy brake pedal — one that feels soft, travels further than it used to, or needs pumping to firm up — almost always means something compressible has got into a hydraulic system that should contain only fluid.
Usually that is air in the brake lines, or moisture in old brake fluid that has boiled into vapour. Both matter because liquid does not compress and gas does: pressure that should be moving the calliper pistons is instead squashing a bubble.
This is not a wait-and-see fault. Unlike worn pads, which degrade predictably, a soft pedal can indicate a leak that is about to become a complete loss of braking on one circuit. Get it checked immediately.
The causes, in order of seriousness
1. A fluid leak — most serious
A leak anywhere in the system lets air in and fluid out. Check the reservoir level: if it is low and you have not recently had pads replaced, suspect a leak. Look for damp patches or staining behind the wheels, on the inside of the tyre, or under the car near the pedal box.

2. Moisture in old brake fluid
Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs water from the atmosphere through the flexible hoses and seals, gradually, throughout its life. Water lowers the fluid’s boiling point substantially. Under repeated or heavy braking the fluid can then boil, and the vapour compresses where fluid would not.

3. Air introduced during work
If the pedal went soft immediately after brake work, air almost certainly entered the system and the bleed was incomplete. This needs redoing rather than living with.
4. A failing master cylinder
Internal seals can bypass, letting fluid slip past the piston instead of being pushed down the lines. The signature is a pedal that sinks slowly to the floor under steady foot pressure, even at a standstill. Serious.
5. A perished or swollen flexible hose
Rubber hoses degrade with age and heat. A hose that balloons under pressure absorbs pedal travel; one that has collapsed internally can act as a one-way valve, holding pressure on and dragging that brake.
6. Rear drum adjustment
On cars with rear drums, self-adjusters seize with corrosion and the shoes sit too far from the drum. Extra pedal travel is needed to take up the gap. Less alarming than the others, and often improves after a few firm reverse stops — but it should still be inspected.
The test you can do in thirty seconds
With the engine off, press the brake pedal repeatedly until it goes hard — you are exhausting the vacuum in the servo. Hold firm pressure and start the engine. The pedal should sink slightly and then hold.
- Pedal sinks slowly toward the floor under steady pressure: suspect the master cylinder or a leak.
- Pedal firms up after several pumps but goes soft again: air or moisture in the system.
- Pedal stays high and firm: the hydraulic system is likely sound, and the problem may be elsewhere.
Also check the reservoir level and look at the fluid itself. Fresh brake fluid is clear to pale straw. Dark brown or black fluid is old and almost certainly carrying moisture.
Is it safe to drive?
No, if: the fluid level is low, the pedal sinks to the floor, the pedal only works after pumping, the brake warning light is on, or you can see fluid leaking. Arrange recovery.
Cautiously, briefly, to a garage, if: the pedal is slightly softer than usual but still firm and high, the fluid level is correct, and braking still feels effective. Leave much more room than normal and keep speeds low.
