Brake pads typically last between 25,000 and 50,000 miles — but that range is so wide as to be almost useless, because mileage is the wrong measure.

Pads wear per braking event, not per mile. What determines their life is how many times you stop and how hard, not how far you travel. That is why a Birmingham city car can need front pads at 20,000 miles while the same model doing motorway miles comfortably reaches 40,000 — and why neither car has anything wrong with it.

The arithmetic, made concrete

A new pad has roughly 10–12mm of friction material. Replacement is due at around 3mm, and the legal minimum for an MOT is lower still, around 1.5mm. So you have about 8mm of usable material, and each stop removes a tiny fraction of it.

Now compare two drivers covering the same 10,000 miles a year:

What makes pads wear faster

  • Stop-start traffic. The single biggest factor. Queuing on the A38 Aston Expressway or the A4540 Middleway is a braking event every few hundred yards.
  • Speed humps and traffic calming. Each one is a decelerate-and-accelerate cycle. Residential routes through Moseley, Kings Heath and Handsworth carry a great many.
  • Vehicle weight. A heavy SUV or a loaded van converts far more energy into heat at each stop than a supermini.
  • Driving style. Late, hard braking wears pads considerably faster than reading the road and coasting. This is the one factor entirely within your control.
  • Front versus rear. Front brakes do most of the work — weight transfers forward under braking — so front pads normally wear roughly twice as fast as rears.
  • A binding calliper. If a calliper does not release fully, the pad drags constantly and can wear out in a fraction of its normal life, usually on one side only.
  • Towing or heavy loads. More mass, more energy, more wear.

How to check yours

You can get a useful indication without removing a wheel:

  • Look through the wheel spokes. On many cars the outer pad is visible against the disc. Compare the friction material thickness to the metal backing plate — if the material looks similar in thickness to the backing plate or thinner, it is getting low.
  • Feel the disc edge (when cold). A pronounced lip at the outer edge means the disc has worn down in the swept area, which suggests the pads have done a lot of work.
  • Listen. A squeal is usually the wear indicator at 2–3mm. Grinding means the material has gone.
  • Check the brake fluid level. As pads wear the calliper pistons extend further, so the fluid level in the reservoir drops slightly. A level that has fallen without a leak is a sign of wear.

A proper measurement needs the wheel off, which is why pad thickness is part of a full service inspection.

Do pads and discs wear out together?

Not quite. As a rough rule, discs last through about two sets of pads — but only if the pads are changed on time. Leave them until they grind and the backing plate scores the disc, and you replace both at once. That is the single most common way a routine brake job doubles in price. Discs also have a minimum thickness stamped on them, and they can fail on corrosion rather than wear — common on cars that stand for long periods.

Brakes are always replaced in axle pairs, never one side. Uneven braking across an axle makes the car unstable under heavy braking and is an MOT failure in its own right, because the test measures the balance between the two wheels.

Can you make them last longer?

Genuinely, yes — and it is mostly free.

Read the road further ahead and lift off earlier. Anticipating a red light and coasting toward it uses no pad material at all, where braking hard at the last moment uses a great deal. On a car with regenerative braking, gentle deceleration may not use the friction brakes at all.

Beyond that: keep weight down, avoid resting your foot on the pedal, and have a binding calliper dealt with promptly rather than replacing the pad it is eating.

When should you call a garage?

Book a brake check if it has been more than two years or 25,000 miles since the last pads, if you hear squealing, if the pedal feels different, or if an MOT advisory mentioned brakes last year — that advisory is very often this year’s failure.

Come sooner if it is grinding, if the car pulls, or if one wheel runs noticeably hotter than the others.
