A vibration at 60mph: how to work out what it actually is

Balance and alignment are two different jobs, and they get confused constantly. Balancing corrects weight distribution around a wheel so it spins without shaking. Alignment sets the angles the wheels point at. A car can be perfectly balanced and badly aligned, or the reverse, and paying for one when you needed the other is a common and avoidable waste.

The symptom tells you a great deal before anything is put on a ramp:

A wobble through the steering wheel that appears in a speed band — typically somewhere between 50 and 70mph — and eases off above and below it is almost always a front wheel out of balance. A shake you feel through the seat and the body rather than the wheel points at the rear wheels instead.

A vibration that only appears when you brake is not a balance problem at all. That is disc thickness variation, usually described as brake judder, and no amount of balancing will touch it.

A hum or drone that rises and falls with road speed, and changes pitch or volume when you sway the car gently from side to side in a safe place, is the classic wheel bearing signature — the load shifts onto and off the failing side as you weave.

Pulling to one side, or tyres worn on the inner or outer edge only, is alignment, not balance.

One local cause worth knowing: a wheel can be buckled without a mark on it. The pothole or the sharp expansion joint that did it may not have looked serious, and an alloy can distort enough to shake at speed while still looking perfect. If a car has been rebalanced twice and still vibrates, the rim itself is worth checking before anyone sells you more weights.

My steering wheel shakes at 60mph but feels fine around town. Why?

Almost always a front wheel out of balance.
