What is auto electrical repair?
Everything electrical that is not the engine management system: wiring looms, connectors and earths, fuses and relays, lighting, central locking and immobilisers, window and mirror motors, sensors, and the communication network the control units use to talk to each other.
It is the least glamorous work a garage does and often the most skilled, because the fault is rarely a component. It is usually a connection — a corroded pin, a chafed wire, a poor earth — and finding it takes wiring diagrams, the right test equipment and patience rather than a parts catalogue.
The characteristic auto electrical fault is intermittent. It happens over bumps, or in the rain, or only when the car is warm, and it has usually been “looked at” once already.
Signs of an electrical fault
- Several unrelated warning lights at once — engine, ABS, airbag, traction control together. That pattern almost always means voltage or an earth, not five separate faults
- Something that works sometimes — a window, a light, a heated screen, central locking
- Faults that appear over bumps or in wet weather — a chafed loom or water ingress
- Repeatedly blowing the same fuse
- The battery going flat while parked — a parasitic drain
- A key or padlock symbol and an engine that cranks but will not run — immobiliser
- Dashboard warning lights that flicker, or displays that reset
- MOT failure on lighting, which is the single biggest failure category nationally
What causes automotive electrical faults?
Corrosion in connectors. The dominant cause on older cars. Moisture and road salt get into multi-plugs and behind pins, and resistance rises until the circuit works only sometimes. Nothing looks broken.
Chafed wiring at flex points. Looms that pass through door hinges, along the suspension to a wheel speed sensor, or across the tailgate hinge, move thousands of times and eventually wear through their insulation. This is why a fault can be specific to opening a door or turning full lock.
Poor earths. Every circuit needs a return path. A corroded earth strap or a bolt that has rusted into its bracket raises resistance for everything sharing it, and the symptoms turn up somewhere apparently unrelated.
Water ingress. Blocked scuttle drains, perished boot and door seals and leaking sunroof drains put water into places designed to stay dry, and control modules mounted low in the footwell or under the boot floor do not survive it.
Badly installed aftermarket equipment. Dashcams, alarms, trackers, tow bar wiring and audio kit spliced into the wrong circuit are a very common source of both blown fuses and parasitic drains.
Low battery voltage. Worth naming again because it sends people chasing faults that do not exist. A weak battery causes modules across the car to log codes simultaneously — checking the battery and charging is genuinely step one, not a delaying tactic.

- Listen properly. When does it happen, how long has it done it, what changed just before it started, and has anything been fitted to the car recently. Intermittent faults are solved by pattern more than by equipment.
- Battery and charging first.
- Read every module, not just the engine. Communication and network codes tell you which part of the loom to look at, and generic code readers frequently cannot see them at all.
- Voltage drop testing. The core technique. Rather than checking whether voltage is present, it measures how much is being lost across a connection while current is actually flowing — which is how a corroded joint that reads fine on a static test gets found.
- Wiggle testing with the circuit live, to reproduce an intermittent while watching it.
- Parasitic drain testing where the battery goes flat parked — measuring what the car draws once it has gone to sleep, then isolating circuit by circuit.
- Repair properly. Soldered and heat-shrunk joints where a repair is appropriate, not a twist and some tape.

Most electrical faults land in the cheaper half of that table once they are found. What costs money is the finding, and that is the honest trade — an hour of proper testing usually beats replacing three parts.
How long does it take?
A straightforward fault — a lighting circuit, a relay, a blown fuse with an obvious cause — is an hour or two. A parasitic drain or a genuine intermittent is open-ended by nature, which is why we work to an agreed limit. Module replacement with coding is usually half a day.
What happens if you delay it?
Electrical faults get worse, not better. Corrosion spreads, chafed insulation wears further, and an intermittent becomes permanent — often at the least convenient moment.
There is a safety dimension that deserves stating plainly. A wire chafing against a metal edge will eventually short. Depending on the circuit and whether it is protected by an appropriately rated fuse, that means anything from a dead accessory to melted insulation to a fire. If you can smell burning insulation — sharp, chemical, sometimes described as fishy — stop the car and switch off.
