Diesel particulate filters and the two-mile trip
A diesel particulate filter traps soot from the exhaust so it does not reach the air. It fills up, and it has to be emptied by burning the soot off. There are two ways that happens, and the difference is where Harborne cars get into trouble.
Passive regeneration happens by itself when the exhaust is naturally hot enough — roughly, sustained running above 40mph for fifteen or twenty minutes. On a car that does a two-mile trip to the High Street, it never happens at all.
So the engine falls back on active regeneration: the ECU injects extra fuel through the injectors late in the cycle purely to raise exhaust temperature and burn the filter clean. That takes ten to twenty minutes of continuous running. If the journey ends before it finishes — which is exactly what a short trip does — the regeneration aborts, and the soot load carries on climbing. Do that repeatedly and you get a warning light, then reduced power, then limp mode.
There is a second consequence that far more people should know about. The extra fuel injected during a failed regeneration does not all burn. Some washes past the piston rings into the sump, and the oil level rises. Diesel in the oil thins it, which reduces its ability to protect the bearings and the turbo, and in serious cases an engine can run on its own diluted sump oil and cannot be switched off. If your dipstick is reading above maximum and you have not added any oil, that is not a good sign — it is a reason to stop and get it looked at.
What to do if the DPF light comes on and the car is otherwise driving normally: take it for a sustained twenty-minute run at 50 to 60mph, holding a lower gear than usual so the revs sit around 2,500 to 3,000. That gives the system the heat and the time it has been asking for, and it frequently completes the regeneration on its own. If the light stays on, if power is reduced, or if the oil level has risen, drive it no further than necessary. A forced regeneration on diagnostic equipment costs a fraction of a replacement filter, and the gap between those two numbers is large.
One honest point, since it is the real answer for a lot of people here: if a car only ever does short local journeys, a diesel is the wrong tool for the job. Nothing is faulty. The car is doing what it was designed to do and being asked to live a life it was not designed for. That is worth knowing before the next one is bought rather than after.
