Oil Warning Light On? Stop Driving — Here’s Why
If the red oil can symbol is lit, stop as soon as it is safe, switch the engine off, and do not restart it.
This is not a service reminder and it is not a “top it up soon” light. The red oil warning is an oil pressure warning. It means the engine may not be receiving oil at all — and an engine without oil pressure destroys its bearings in under a minute, not over a journey.
There is no version of this where driving a bit further is the cheaper option. Recovery costs less than a crankshaft.
Check which symbol you have. Some cars have two:
- Red oil can, sometimes dripping — low oil pressure. Stop immediately.
- Amber or yellow oil can, sometimes with a wavy line or MIN — low oil level. Not an emergency. Check and top up at the next safe opportunity, then find out where it went.
Why pressure loss is different from everything else
Every crankshaft bearing in your engine works by hydrodynamic lubrication. The rotating shaft drags oil into a converging gap and generates enough pressure to hold the two metal surfaces completely apart, on a film a few microns thick. Nothing touches. That is why a bearing can last 200,000 miles.
Take the oil pressure away and that film collapses immediately. The shaft is now spinning against a soft bearing shell at thousands of revolutions per minute with the full force of combustion behind it. The shell wipes, the clearance opens, the crank journal scores.
The timescale is what makes this different from every other warning light. An engine management light gives you days. Overheating gives you a couple of miles. Oil pressure gives you seconds.
What to do, in order
- Pull over safely and switch off. Do not finish the journey. Do not “just get it home”.
- Listen to what you heard beforehand. If there was a knocking or hammering noise, tell whoever collects the car — that changes the picture considerably.
- Wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back, then check the level on flat ground.
- If the level is low, top it up with the correct oil and see whether the light goes out when you restart. If it does, the light did its job — but the engine has run without pressure at some point, so have it looked at rather than assuming no harm was done.
- If the level is fine and the light is still on, do not drive it. This is the dangerous case. An engine can be completely full of oil and have no pressure at all.
What causes it

The case people get wrong: “it only comes on at idle when it’s hot”
This pattern — light flickers or illuminates at a warm idle, goes out the moment you touch the throttle — is very often dismissed as a dying sensor. It is usually not.
It is the signature of genuinely low pressure caused by bearing wear. As clearances open up, oil escapes past the bearings faster than the pump can replace it. At higher revs the pump moves enough oil to keep up; at idle it cannot. Hot oil is thinner, which is why it appears when warm and not when cold.
Replacing the pressure switch makes the light go away and changes nothing about the engine. If your car does this, have the pressure measured properly with a mechanical gauge before anyone fits a sensor — that test settles it in minutes and is the difference between managing a known-worn engine sensibly and destroying it.
Is it an MOT failure?
The oil pressure lamp is not one of the dashboard warning lights the MOT specifically checks, unlike the engine management, ABS and airbag warnings. That is of no practical comfort — a car that should not be driven to the shops should not be driven to a test centre either.

The first row is the point. Measuring the pressure costs less than any of the repairs and tells you which of them you are actually facing.
When should you call a garage?
Immediately, from where you have stopped, if the red light came on while driving and the oil level turns out to be correct. Have it recovered rather than driven.
Immediately if the light appeared alongside a knocking noise. Oil starvation is the usual route to a bottom-end knock, and continuing to run the engine is what turns a bearing repair into a replacement engine.
Soon if the light flickers only at hot idle and the car otherwise drives normally. It is not an emergency this minute, but it is telling you something real and it does not improve on its own.
