Long-Life Servicing: Why It May Be Wrong for Your Car
Long-life servicing lets the car decide when it needs an oil change, stretching the interval towards two years or somewhere near 18,000 miles instead of a fixed twelve months or 10,000.
It is genuine engineering, not a marketing trick. But it was designed around a specific driving pattern — high, steady, warm mileage — and if your driving is not that, it will leave oil in your engine long after it has stopped doing its job.
If most of your journeys are short, you want the fixed schedule. On a lot of cars that is a setting that can simply be changed, and on the rest you can service more often regardless of what the dashboard says.

What the car is actually measuring
Here is the thing worth understanding: most of these systems estimate oil condition. They do not measure it.
The inputs are typically mileage, engine running hours, engine speed and load, coolant and oil temperature, the number of cold starts, and fuel consumed. Some VW group cars add an oil level and temperature sensor in the sump, which is genuinely more information — but level and temperature still are not chemistry.
So the dashboard number is the output of a model of how hard the oil has probably worked. It is a good model for the driving it was built around. It is a poor one for everything else.
Why the model fails on short journeys
The damage that short trips do to oil is fuel dilution and condensation. A cold engine runs rich, unburnt fuel gets past the rings into the sump, and water vapour from combustion condenses in the crankcase. Both boil back off on a long run. On a five-mile trip neither does.
Now look at what the algorithm sees: low engine load, modest revs, gentle use, few motorway miles. By its inputs, the oil has had an easy life — so it extends the interval.
The oil, meanwhile, is accumulating exactly the contamination the algorithm has no way of detecting. That is the whole problem in one sentence: the driving that is hardest on oil looks gentlest to the sensors.
Left on the wrong schedule for years, the consequences show up in the places fed by narrow oilways under high load — turbocharger bearings and timing chain tensioners — and as sludge, which builds fastest in precisely this use case.
The expensive mistake: long-life schedule, ordinary oil
This one is worth more than everything else on the page, because it is common, invisible, and entirely avoidable.
A long-life interval is only safe with a long-life approved oil. VW 504.00 and 507.00, BMW Longlife-04, the relevant Mercedes 229 sheets — these exist because an oil asked to last two years needs a far greater additive reserve and much better oxidation stability than one changed annually.
Put a standard oil into a car running an 18,000-mile schedule and you have asked an additive package designed for 10,000 miles to cover nearly twice that. Nothing goes wrong on the day. It goes wrong at 60,000 miles, in the turbo.

The reverse causes no harm at all — a long-life oil used on a fixed schedule is simply a better oil changed sooner.
How to find out which schedule you are on
- The dashboard. A car counting down to a service in miles or days is on a variable schedule.
- The service book or handbook, which will name it.
- The service history. Intervals of 18,000–20,000 miles or two years say variable; annual entries say fixed.
- Ask, with the registration. It can be read from the car’s own configuration.
Switching to a fixed schedule
On many VW group cars this is a coding change and takes minutes. On others there is no formal switch, in which case the answer is simply to change the oil annually and reset the indicator — the car is perfectly happy being serviced more often than it asks.
Two reassurances, because people worry about both:
Servicing more frequently than the manufacturer requires never invalidates a warranty. Warranties are put at risk by under-servicing, by missing the schedule, or by using the wrong specification parts and fluids — never by doing it more often.
Nor does using an independent garage, provided the schedule is followed and the correct specification is used. That is a separate and widely misunderstood point, and it is worth knowing before you pay dealer rates out of caution.
If you are buying used
An unknown schedule plus an unknown oil is the worst combination, and it is extremely common on a car with patchy history. The cheap insurance is an oil and filter change with the correct approved oil as soon as you buy it, whatever the service indicator says. It costs around a hundred pounds and resets the clock on the one thing you cannot inspect.

Moving from a two-year interval to an annual one costs you roughly one extra oil change every two years. Against a turbocharger at £700–£1,800, it is not a close decision.

Before your next service, if you are on a variable schedule and your driving is mostly short trips. That is the conversation worth having, and it changes what we recommend.
