How Long Does a Car Battery Last in the UK?
Four to six years is typical in the UK. Three to four is realistic on a car doing short urban journeys from a kerbside space, and seven or eight is achievable on a car that covers steady mileage and lives on a driveway.

The number itself is less useful than two things this page can tell you: how old yours actually is, and what is doing the damage — because it is almost certainly not what you think.
How old is yours?
Most people have no idea, and it is the single most predictive fact available.
Look for a date code. Nearly every battery carries its manufacture date somewhere on the top or the side — sometimes printed plainly, sometimes stamped into the case, sometimes as a short code on a sticker. Formats vary between manufacturers, so if the code is not obviously a date, the fitting invoice is the reliable record.
Two things worth knowing about that date:
- Batteries age on the shelf. A battery that sat in a warehouse for eighteen months before it was fitted has already used part of its life, because self-discharge and sulphation happen whether or not it is in a car. When buying, a recent date code is worth asking for
- The clock starts at manufacture, not at fitting — so a “two-year-old” battery may be nearer three
If there is no code and no invoice and the car is more than five years old on its original battery, treat it as due for a test rather than a guess.
Heat kills batteries. Cold just exposes them
This is the counter-intuitive part, and it changes what you do about it.
Everyone associates battery failure with winter, and winter is certainly when it happens. But cold is not what wears a battery out. Sustained heat is.
Inside a lead-acid battery, higher temperatures accelerate two irreversible processes: corrosion of the positive grid, which is the structure holding the active material in place, and water loss from the electrolyte, which exposes the top of the plates. Both do permanent damage, both happen faster the hotter it gets, and an engine bay in July is hot for hours at a time.
So the degradation happens through spring and summer, quietly, while the battery still has enough reserve to start the car every morning without complaint. Then the temperature drops, available capacity falls, cranking demand rises, and the shortfall finally shows.
A battery “killed by the cold” in December was mostly finished off in July. Which is exactly why an October test is worth so much more than a December one — it measures what is left before the weather asks for it.
Sulphation, and why one flat weekend matters
Whenever a lead-acid battery sits below full charge, lead sulphate forms on the plates. That is normal — it is part of how the chemistry works, and recharging promptly converts it back.
Leave it and the crystals harden. Over days and weeks they grow into a stable, non-conductive form that no longer dissolves back into the electrolyte, permanently taking that portion of the plate out of service. The battery does not fail; it just has less capacity than it did, for ever.
Two practical consequences:
- A battery left flat for a fortnight is never the same again. One forgotten interior light over a holiday can take a real bite out of a battery’s remaining life, even though the car starts fine once jumped
- A battery living permanently at 70–80% charge — which is exactly what short journeys produce — is sulphating slowly and continuously. That is the mechanism behind the “city cars eat batteries” observation, rather than anything dramatic
The numbers on the label
Two matter when you replace one.
Ah — amp hours. Capacity: how much energy it stores. This governs how long the car can run on the battery alone, which matters more on a stop-start car than it used to.
CCA — cold cranking amps. How much current it can deliver at −18°C, which is the number that determines whether it turns a cold engine. Look for the EN standard figure, since different standards give different numbers for the same battery.
Never fit less CCA than the car specifies. It is a false economy in the most literal way — the saving is small and the shortfall appears in exactly the conditions the rating exists for. Fitting a higher CCA than specified is harmless; the starter draws what it needs.
Beyond the numbers, the type is not optional. A car with stop-start needs an EFB or AGM battery, and an AGM must never be replaced with an EFB — the reasons, and why a new battery often has to be registered to the car, are worth reading before buying anything, because fitting the cheap type reliably costs more inside a year.
One physical detail that gets skipped: the clamp must be tight. Vibration shakes active material off the plates, and a battery that has been rattling in a loose cradle for a year has lost capacity to that alone.
What actually extends battery life
In order of how much difference it makes:
1. A smart battery conditioner, if the car sits. For a low-mileage car this is the single best thing you can buy, and it is not the same as an old-fashioned trickle charger. A trickle charger pushes a constant current and will cook a battery if left on. A smart conditioner monitors the battery, charges it properly, then maintains it and stops — so it can be left connected for months. If your car does a few hundred miles a year, one of these will roughly double the life of its battery.
2. One sustained run a week or fortnight. Twenty minutes or more at road speed puts a genuine charge back. A five-mile commute does not, because the charging system is also running everything else.
3. Do not leave it flat. If the car goes flat, charge it properly within days rather than leaving it until the weekend after next.
4. Keep the terminals clean and the clamp tight. Corrosion adds resistance exactly where you can least afford it.
5. Switch the heavy loads off before you switch the engine off. Heated rear screen, heated seats, headlights. It costs the battery nothing to start the next journey without them already drawing.
What does not work: disconnecting the battery overnight on a modern car, which loses adaptations and settings and does nothing a conditioner would not do better.
When to replace it before it strands you
Three triggers, any one of which is enough:
- Stop-start has quietly stopped engaging. The best early warning your car gives. The battery management system has decided the state of charge is too low to risk shutting the engine down, and it usually appears months before any starting trouble
- Cranking has become noticeably slower, particularly from cold, on a battery over four years old
- A state-of-health test below about 60–70%. That battery will start the car all autumn and fail on the first hard frost
If the car is going flat but the battery tests healthy, the answer is elsewhere — either something is draining it while parked, or the charging system is not replacing what is used. Telling the battery and the alternator apart takes about five minutes and saves buying the wrong part.

That last row is worth putting next to the ones above it. On a car that sits most of the week, a conditioner costs less than half a battery and prevents several.

A deliberate weekly run. Twenty to thirty minutes at sustained road speed, treated as maintenance rather than a trip. It also does real work for several other things short journeys damage, so it is not a single-purpose chore.
Test in October and accept a shorter replacement cycle. If your car lives at the kerb and does four miles a day, budget for a battery every three to four years and replace it on the test rather than on a breakdown. It is the same money either way, minus the recovery truck and the missed morning.
Do not let it sit flat. If it goes flat and you cannot charge it at home, that is a reason to get it seen rather than to keep jump-starting it — each flat week is permanent capacity gone.
When should you call a garage?
Book a test in October if the battery is over three years old, or you do not know how old it is. It takes minutes, it is usually free, and it measures state of health rather than whether the car happened to start today.
Book it now if stop-start has stopped working, or cranking has slowed.
Ask for the charging system to be tested at the same time. A battery that keeps going flat is frequently an alternator problem wearing a battery’s clothes, and buying two batteries in a year is how people find that out expensively.
