Here is the single idea this whole page rests on: almost nothing on a car wears out per mile. It wears out per event.

Brake pads wear per braking event. Clutches wear per slip. Engine oil degrades per cold start. A particulate filter fills up per journey that ends before it gets hot.

A mile of empty dual carriageway contains almost none of those events. A mile of the Coventry Road at half past five contains dozens. Which is why two cars with identical odometers can be in completely different condition — and why a Birmingham commuter covering 10,000 miles a year can genuinely need parts before someone covering 25,000 motorway miles.

Your mileage is not lying to you exactly. It is just measuring the wrong thing.

The three mechanisms behind all of it

Ten different symptoms, but really only three causes.

1. Stop-start converts momentum into heat. Every time you slow down, the energy has to go somewhere, and it goes into the brakes as heat. Pads have roughly 10–12mm of friction material when new and are due at about 3mm, and that material is removed per stop. A motorway commute might involve a few dozen meaningful stops a day; a Coventry Road commute involves several hundred. The clutch story is identical, with slip in place of braking.

2. The engine never gets properly hot. This is the quiet one and it causes more expensive damage than the first. A cold engine runs a rich mixture, so unburnt fuel gets past the piston rings into the sump; combustion produces water vapour, and some condenses in the crankcase. Both boil back off — but only once the oil has been genuinely hot for a sustained period. On a five-mile trip it never is, so fuel and water accumulate in the oil and the acids they form go to work on bearing surfaces. Sludge in the oilways is the end state of that process.

The same lack of heat is why particulate filters block, why EGR valves clog, and why catalytic converters underperform. All three need sustained temperature and a city commute does not supply it.

3. The electrical system runs at a deficit. Starting an engine takes a substantial amount out of the battery and it takes a sustained run to put it back. A short trip does not, so every journey leaves a small shortfall. Through summer there is enough reserve to hide it; when the cold arrives, capacity falls and the engine needs more current, and the accumulated deficit finally exceeds what is left. That is why so many batteries fail in the same fortnight each December on cars that were fine in October.

What this means in practice

Not “your car is doomed”. It means the standard advice, which is written around average national mileage, is calibrated for a driver you are not.

Service by time, not by the odometer. If you cover 4,000 miles a year around the city, waiting for a 10,000-mile trigger means running the last two years on oil that was finished. Nearly every handbook contains a shorter “severe” or “city” schedule listing exactly these conditions — frequent short journeys, extended idling, stop-start traffic. For most Birmingham drivers the severe schedule is the normal one.

Be sceptical of long-life intervals. Variable schedules stretching towards two years were engineered around steady motorway mileage, and short-trip driving is close to the worst case for them — the algorithm cannot see the damage that short journeys actually do.

Give the car a proper run. Twenty minutes at sustained road speed, once a week or fortnight, does real work: it burns soot out of the particulate filter, gets the oil hot enough to shed fuel and water, brings the catalytic converter up to temperature, and puts a genuine charge back into the battery. It is the single highest-value habit available to an urban driver and it costs the price of the fuel.

Expect brakes and clutches sooner, and do not read it as a fault. A clutch at 60,000 city miles is not a badly built clutch. It is arithmetic.

Change down rather than labouring. Low revs plus high load is the worst case for a dual-mass flywheel, and it is a habit rather than a defect — which makes it one of the few items here you can simply decide to stop doing.

One city hazard that is not wear at all

Worth knowing separately if you park on the street: catalytic converter theft. It has nothing to do with how you drive, it disproportionately affects hybrids and higher-clearance vehicles, and the precautions are entirely different from everything else on this page.

When should you call a garage?

The useful moment is before a symptom, because most of what is described here is gradual by nature. If your driving is mostly short urban journeys, the things worth asking for by name are: an oil change on a time basis rather than a mileage one, a brake inspection annually, a battery and charging test in October, and — on a diesel — a look at the particulate filter’s soot load before the light comes on.
