Power Steering Problems: Noises, Stiffness and Leaks
The first question is not what is wrong. It is which system you have — because heavy steering, a whine and a warning light mean completely different things on hydraulic assistance than on electric, and most owners have never been told which is fitted to their car.
Hydraulic (HPAS): a belt-driven pump, a fluid reservoir, high-pressure pipes. Older, simpler, and it leaks.
Electric (EPS): a motor on the column or the rack, a torque sensor reading how hard you are turning, a control module. No fluid, but it is sensitive to system voltage and it can put a light on the dashboard.
Thirty seconds under the bonnet settles it, and everything after that follows from the answer.
Three checks that tell you which you have
- Look for a reservoir. A small tank with a cap marked for power steering fluid, usually with hoses running to a pulley-driven pump on the front of the engine, means hydraulic. No reservoir and no pump means electric
- Look at the dashboard. A steering warning symbol — usually a steering wheel with an exclamation mark — means electric. Hydraulic systems have no warning light at all, which is part of why their faults get ignored
- Turn the wheel with the ignition on and the engine off. Many electric systems will still assist. A hydraulic one will not, because the pump is not turning
Some cars use an electro-hydraulic hybrid — a hydraulic rack driven by an electric pump rather than a belt. It has a reservoir and fluid, so treat it as hydraulic for fault-finding, but it can also fail electrically.
What each symptom means, by system

The thermal cut-back row is the one that causes needless worry. Most electric systems deliberately reduce assistance for a minute or two when the motor gets hot, which happens after repeated full-lock manoeuvres at a standstill — reversing into a tight bay, or a multi-storey ramp. It is the system protecting itself, not failing. If it happens frequently, or a light appears with it, that is different and worth reading.
What each noise means
A whine that rises and falls with engine speed, on a hydraulic system, is the pump. The usual cause is low fluid, and the second is air drawn in through a leak on the suction side. Check the level before anything else — it is free and it is right often enough to be worth doing first.
A groan or moan only at full lock is the pump pushing against its pressure relief valve. A second or two of it is normal. Holding the wheel hard against the stop for longer builds pressure and heats the fluid, and over years that wears the pump and hardens the seals. Back off a fraction from full lock and the noise stops.
A knock or clunk from the front at low speed over uneven ground is usually mechanical rather than assistance — most often a worn track rod end, sometimes a rack that has developed internal play. It needs a ramp and load through the joint to tell them apart from a tired damper or a worn top mount, which produce noises in the same family.
A hiss or rush as you turn, on a hydraulic system, is fluid moving through the valve. Normal on many cars. Loud and new is worth a look.
A grinding or notchy feel as you turn, with no noise from the engine, can be a column bearing or an upper mount rather than the rack.
Fluid — the part people get wrong
Two mistakes cost more than they should.
Mistake one: assuming all power steering fluid is the same. It is not, and the differences matter. Some systems specify a dedicated synthetic power steering fluid. Some specify automatic transmission fluid to a particular standard. Some — several German makes among them — specify a green mineral hydraulic fluid that must not be mixed with anything else.
Putting the wrong type in swells or shrinks the seals, which produces exactly the leak you were trying to prevent. Colour is not a specification. Two fluids that look identical can be chemically incompatible. The cap or the handbook names the correct one, and if neither is legible, ask before topping up.
Mistake two: believing it is sealed for life. Power steering fluid is not listed in the service schedule on a great many cars, which owners reasonably read as “nothing to do”. It degrades with heat and age like any other hydraulic fluid, and old fluid wears pumps and hardens seals. On a car whose steering works as hard as a city car’s does, it is worth checking the condition — dark, thin or burnt-smelling fluid is telling you something. A change and bleed is £70–£150.
One more: topping up a leak is not a repair. Fluid that is disappearing is going somewhere, and the two places it commonly goes are onto a hot exhaust and into the rack gaiters. Neither is a good outcome.
If the assistance fails completely while driving
Worth reading before it happens, because the instinctive reaction is the wrong one.
You have not lost steering. Both hydraulic and electric systems are mechanically connected — the assistance is a helper, not the mechanism. If it fails, the steering still works. It simply takes real physical effort.
What to do:
- Both hands on the wheel and keep them there
- Do not brake hard. Slow gradually — a sudden stop combined with an unexpected steering effort is what turns this into an incident
- Expect it to be far heavier at low speed than at road speed. Effort is roughly proportional to how hard the tyre is being dragged across the tarmac, so 50mph feels close to normal and the car park at the end feels enormous
- Pull over somewhere you can leave the car straight, rather than manoeuvring into a tight space
If it happened alongside a battery warning light, that is likely a snapped auxiliary belt — which on a hydraulic car takes the pump, and on many engines the water pump and alternator with it. In that case the temperature gauge matters more than the steering does.
The gaiter clock
The one preventable fault on this page. A rack gaiter is a rubber boot keeping grit and water out of the rack’s internals. Once it splits, contamination gets in and wears the seals and the rack teeth, and there is no warning when the damage crosses from repairable to not — you find out at the point of quoting.
A gaiter is £60–£140. A rack is £400–£900. It is also an MOT failure in its own right, which means for most people the MOT is the first they hear of it — and by then it has been split for some unknown length of time. Any garage can check both in two minutes on a ramp, and it is worth asking for annually rather than waiting to be told.
Check the voltage before condemning an EPS motor
An electric steering motor draws heavy current, particularly at low speed where it is doing the most work. Low system voltage or a poor earth can produce heavy steering and a steering warning light with nothing at all wrong with the steering.
The tell is that other things are odd too — dim or flickering lights, a slow blower, unrelated warning lights appearing together, or a car that has been reluctant to start. If several electrical symptoms have arrived at once, work out whether it is the battery or the charging system before anyone quotes for a steering motor. The difference in cost is considerable.

A track rod end or a gaiter is an hour or two including alignment. A pump is two to three hours. A rack is four to five, and longer where the subframe has to come down.
Alignment afterwards is part of the job rather than an extra — replacing any steering component changes the angles the wheels sit at, and on a modern car the steering angle sensor usually needs recalibrating too, because stability control and lane assist read straight-ahead from it.
The Birmingham signature: a dead spot on-centre
Steering wear here is driven by parking rather than by driving, which is genuinely unusual.
Turning the wheel while stationary is the hardest thing you can ask of a steering system: the tyre has to be dragged sideways across the tarmac against its full grip, and all of that resistance goes back through the track rod ends and the rack. A day that includes a multi-storey ramp, a tight terraced street and a high-street bay is dozens of full-lock manoeuvres at walking pace — maximum load at the speed where the tyre grips hardest.
The characteristic result locally is a dead area at the straight-ahead position: a few degrees of wheel movement before the car responds. Drivers almost universally dismiss it as the car simply feeling like that, and it is in fact wear in the rack or the track rod ends, arriving gradually enough that nobody notices the day it started.
It is worth acting on for two reasons. It wears tyres continuously, and a track rod end with increasing play can eventually separate — which means losing steering on that wheel entirely.
The habit that helps costs nothing: keep the car creeping while you turn. Even at walking pace, a rolling tyre renews its contact patch and steers with a fraction of the effort. It noticeably slows shoulder wear on the front tyres and takes real load off the rack and the pump over the life of the car.
When should you call a garage?
Book it now if a rack gaiter is split, if there is a fluid leak, or if there is play or a dead spot at the straight-ahead. The gaiter in particular has a clock on it that you cannot see.
Book it now if the steering is heavy all the time rather than intermittently, or if a steering warning light is on. An illuminated EPS light is an MOT failure as well as a fault.
Check the fluid level first if there is a whine on a hydraulic car. It is free and it is the most common cause.
