There is no universal figure, and anyone who gives you one without asking what you drive is guessing. Timing belt intervals run somewhere between four and ten years, or 60,000 and 120,000 miles, whichever comes first — and the exact figure belongs to your specific engine, not to your model.

The part that catches people out is the word first. Mileage is the trigger everyone watches. Time is the trigger that actually arrives — because rubber ages whether the car moves or not, and a low-mileage older car will hit its year limit long before it hits its mileage one.

Where to find your actual interval

Four sources, in descending order of how much you should trust them.

1. The manufacturer’s schedule for your exact engine. Looked up from the registration or the VIN, which is how a garage does it. This is the only source that accounts for engine variants, mid-life revisions and market differences — and manufacturers do revise these figures after cars are sold.

2. The owner’s handbook. Good, with one caveat: it reflects what was believed when the car was built. If the interval was later shortened, your handbook will not say so.

3. An under-bonnet sticker. Not the interval, but the record — a decent garage leaves a sticker with the date and mileage of the last change. It tells you where you stand rather than what the rule is.

4. Forums and general advice. This is where “it’s 100,000 miles on those” comes from, and it is wrong often enough to be dangerous. It is usually someone’s memory of a different variant of your engine.

Why the time limit matters more than the mileage

A cambelt is a reinforced rubber toothed belt. Its job is to hold precise timing between the crankshaft and the camshafts under constant tension and heat cycling, and it does that using the elasticity of the rubber compound and the strength of the cords inside it.

Both degrade with age rather than distance. The compound hardens and loses flexibility, the bond between the rubber and the reinforcing cords weakens, and the teeth become brittle enough to shear off under load. A belt that has sat in a garage for eight years has aged almost as much as one that covered 80,000 miles in the same period.

Two things accelerate it regardless of the calendar:

  • Oil contamination from a leaking camshaft or crankshaft seal. Oil softens the compound quickly, and a belt soaked in it can fail years early
  • Coolant contamination from a weeping water pump, which does the same thing from the other direction

Which is why the seals are inspected while access is open. A leak that destroyed the old belt will destroy the new one just as happily.

What resets the clock — and what does not

That second row is the one that surprises people most. A comprehensive service history proves the oil was changed. It says nothing whatsoever about the belt, and a cambelt is the single most commonly missed item on a used car.

Can I stretch it?

The honest answer has two parts, and the second one matters more.

The first part: the risk is not linear. A belt does not become gradually more likely to fail across its life and then cross a line on the due date. It sits at a very low failure rate for most of its interval and then climbs steeply, and manufacturers set the figure where that climb begins rather than where failures actually start.

The second part: there is no partial failure. Almost everything else on a car degrades in a way you can notice and act on. A cambelt works perfectly until it does not. There is no warning light, no limp-home mode and no rough-running stage — and on an interference engine, which is most modern engines, the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different moments. Lose the timing and they collide. Valves bend, pistons are damaged, and the cylinder head is frequently destroyed.

The repair is then the same strip-down as a head gasket job with a set of new valves on top of it, which is why a planned £250–£650 becomes low four figures on a car that may not be worth it.

So: a few hundred miles past a mileage trigger while you get it booked in is a different thing from three years past a time trigger. If you are genuinely uncertain where you stand, the cheaper assumption is that it is due.

If you have just bought the car

This is the situation that produces most of the failures we see, and it has a short checklist.

  1. Look for a receipt, not a claim. A cambelt invoice names the parts — belt, tensioner, idlers, and the water pump where applicable — and gives a date and a mileage
  2. Open the bonnet and look for a sticker near the belt cover or on the slam panel
  3. Check the MOT history on the DVLA service to confirm the mileage the receipt claims is plausible
  4. Establish whether it even has a belt. Some engines use a chain, and some use a belt that runs inside the engine in oil — three different arrangements with three different rules
  5. If you find nothing, assume it has not been done

That last line sounds pessimistic and it is simply the cheaper assumption. Doing it unnecessarily costs a few hundred pounds. Being wrong costs the engine.

Two situations worth flagging

The low-mileage older car. A twelve-year-old car showing 55,000 miles has not reached a 100,000-mile trigger and never will. Owners look at the mileage, conclude they are nowhere near due, and are years past the time limit. This is common across Birmingham’s older-than-average fleet, and it became more common when drivers chose to keep a compliant older petrol car rather than replace it ahead of the Clean Air Zone.

The car that has been standing. A vehicle laid up for a year or more has been ageing its belt the entire time, and rubber that has sat under constant tension in one position takes a set. If a car is coming back into use after a long layup, the belt is worth checking before the first long journey rather than after it.

Always have it quoted as a kit — belt, tensioner, idler pulleys, and the water pump on the many engines where the belt drives it. The tensioner bearing is very often what actually fails rather than the belt itself, and a seizing water pump strips a belt instantly. Fitting a belt on its own is false economy dressed up as a saving.

When should you call a garage?

Book it if you have passed either trigger, or if you have no documentation and no idea. There is no symptom to wait for — that is the entire reason it is a scheduled job.

Book it sooner if there is a rattle, whine or rumble from the belt end of the engine, or if you can see oil or coolant on the belt with the cover off. The tensioner bearing announces itself; the belt does not.

Stop cranking immediately if the engine suddenly turns over unusually fast, smoothly and quietly and will not start.
