There are three arrangements in circulation now, not two: a dry rubber timing belt on the outside of the engine, a metal timing chain running inside it in oil, and a belt that runs inside the engine in oil — the so-called wet belt, which is a genuinely different thing from either.

The quickest way to find out which you have is to give a garage your registration. If you want to work it out yourself, the cover at the end of the engine is the giveaway: a large ribbed plastic cover held on with clips or small bolts is almost always a belt. A cast metal cover that forms part of the engine itself is a chain.

It matters because the maintenance rules are completely different, and because “it’s got a chain, so there’s nothing to do” is one of the more expensive things a used car buyer can believe.

Four ways to tell which you have

  1. Ask, with the registration. A parts lookup resolves the exact engine variant in seconds. This is the only method that is reliable across every make
  2. Look at the cover. Plastic and ribbed, on the end of the engine, removable by hand tools — belt. Cast alloy, integral to the block, with the sump bolting up to it — chain
  3. Check the service schedule. If the manufacturer lists a cambelt interval, it has a belt. If the schedule has no timing item at all, it is a chain or a wet belt
  4. Listen from cold. A brief metallic rattle for a second or two on start-up, clearing as oil pressure builds, is a chain noise. Belts are silent — the noises that come from a belt end are usually the tensioner bearing, and they are a whine or rumble rather than a rattle

Method two has one trap worth naming: some engines have a plastic cover over a chain, purely for noise. If the cover looks like a belt cover but the schedule lists no belt interval, trust the schedule.

Timing belts

A toothed rubber belt on the outside of the engine, driven off the crankshaft, turning the camshafts in exact step. It is quiet, light, cheap to make, and it is a scheduled replacement item with both a mileage limit and a time limit.

The advantage: a known cost on a known date. You replace it, you get a receipt, you forget about it for years.

The disadvantage: if you do not replace it, it gives you no warning at all before it fails, and on an interference engine that failure bends valves. Working out your actual interval is the whole job here, because there is no universal figure and no symptom to wait for.

Timing chains

A metal chain running inside the engine, lubricated by engine oil, kept taut by a tensioner that is usually powered by oil pressure and guided by plastic or composite rails.

Manufacturers generally design them to last the life of the engine. That is a design intention, not a guarantee, and treating it as one is where the trouble starts.

Chains do not snap the way belts do. They stretch — strictly, the pins and bushings wear so the chain lengthens — and the guide rails wear alongside them. The tensioner takes up the slack until it reaches the end of its travel, and after that the timing drifts.

What that looks like from the driver’s seat:

  • A rattle for a second or two on cold start-up, before oil pressure reaches the tensioner. This is the classic early sign and the one worth acting on
  • A rattle that lasts longer, or appears at idle when warm
  • An engine management light with camshaft/crankshaft correlation codes — the ECU comparing the two position sensors and finding they no longer agree
  • Rough running, poor economy or a loss of power as valve timing drifts from where the ECU believes it is

A chain that jumps a tooth does the same kind of damage a snapped belt does. The difference is that a chain usually tells you first, and a rattle on start-up is worth distinguishing from the other noises an engine makes rather than living with.

Chains live or die on oil. That is the single most useful thing on this section. The tensioner is hydraulic, so low oil level or low oil pressure means an unsupported chain. Extended service intervals and sludge in the galleries starve the tensioner and accelerate rail wear. A chain-driven engine on annual oil changes with the right specification generally does last; one on stretched intervals frequently does not.

Wet belts — the third category

This is the one most owners have never heard of, and it has become common enough that it belongs on any belt-versus-chain page written now.

A wet belt is a rubber toothed belt that runs inside the engine, immersed in engine oil, made from a compound intended to survive there. Some engines use one for the camshafts, some for the oil pump, some for both. Manufacturers adopted them for lower friction and less noise than a chain, with better fuel economy figures as the pay-off. You will find them across several mainstream small petrol and diesel engine families from the last decade or so, including familiar three-cylinder turbo petrols and small modern diesels.

Two things make them different from a dry belt:

The failure mode is worse. A degrading wet belt sheds fine rubber material into the oil. That debris migrates to the lowest point in the system and collects at the oil pump pickup strainer. So the belt can destroy the engine through oil starvation before it ever loses timing — a bearing failure with a full sump and no warning light until the oil pressure lamp comes on, by which point it is late.

Oil specification is not optional. The belt compound is engineered for a particular oil chemistry. Using a nearly-right oil, or leaving the correct oil in far too long, attacks the belt directly. On a wet-belt engine, the manufacturer approval on the bottle matters more than the brand on it, and short-interval oil changes are cheap insurance rather than over-servicing.

Manufacturers have revised wet belt intervals downwards more than once since these engines launched, which is precisely why the figure has to be confirmed against your specific vehicle rather than taken from a forum thread or an older handbook.

So which is better?

Neither, honestly. They trade different things.

The practical reading of that table: a belt gives you a predictable bill on a predictable date. A chain gives you no bill and no date, but hands you the consequences of every skipped oil change. A wet belt gives you both a scheduled bill and an oil dependency, which is why it has the worst reputation of the three despite being newer.

Chains cost more when they do need doing because the front of the engine has to come apart, and on some layouts the sump and engine mounting come off with it.

When should you call a garage?

Ring with your registration if you simply do not know which you have. It costs nothing to find out, and it decides whether you have a maintenance date in the diary or an oil-change discipline to keep.

Book it if you hear a rattle on cold start-up that lasts more than a moment, or if the engine management light is on with timing correlation codes. A stretched chain caught early is a chain and guides. Caught late it is the same collision damage a snapped belt causes.

Do not stretch the oil interval on a chain or a wet belt engine, whatever the service indicator says. On both, the oil is a timing component — an oil and filter change with the correct specification is the cheapest protection available for either.
