What is a timing belt replacement?

The timing belt — the cambelt — keeps the crankshaft and the camshafts turning in step, so the valves open and close at exactly the right point in each piston’s travel. It is a toothed rubber belt, and it is a scheduled replacement item with both a mileage interval and a time interval.

The reason it matters more than any other maintenance job on the car is what happens when it breaks. Most modern engines are interference designs, which means the valves and the pistons occupy the same space at different moments. Lose the timing and they meet. Valves bend, pistons are damaged, and frequently the cylinder head is destroyed.

Not every car has one. Some engines use a timing chain, which runs in oil and is generally designed to last the life of the engine — although chains stretch too, and a rattle on start-up is worth investigating. If you are not sure which your car has, give us the registration and we will tell you.

A proper replacement is a kit, not a belt: the belt, the tensioner, any idler pulleys, and — on the many engines where the belt also drives it — the water pump.

Signs you need a timing belt

Usually there are none, and that is the entire point. A cambelt gives almost no warning before it fails. It is replaced on a schedule precisely because you cannot wait for a symptom.

What does sometimes appear:

  • A rattle, whine or rumble from the belt cover end of the engine — usually the tensioner bearing, which is very often what actually fails rather than the belt itself
  • Visible cracking, glazing or missing teeth if the cover is removed
  • Oil or coolant contamination on the belt from a leaking seal, which degrades rubber quickly
  • Rough running or a misfire, if the belt has already jumped a tooth
  • An engine that cranks unusually fast, smoothly and quietly and will not start — that can mean there is no compression because the belt has already gone. Stop cranking if that happens

The far more useful question is not “does it have symptoms” but “when was it last done, and is there a receipt”.

What causes a timing belt to fail?

Age. Rubber degrades whether the car moves or not. This is why the interval is time or mileage, whichever comes first, and why a low-mileage older car is often more at risk than a high-mileage newer one.

Mileage. Typical intervals run somewhere between four and ten years or 60,000 to 120,000 miles depending on the engine. There is no universal figure — it is specific to your engine, and we confirm it from the vehicle rather than a rule of thumb.

Tensioner failure. The tensioner holds the belt at the correct tension through a bearing. When that bearing dries out and seizes, the belt is destroyed in seconds. This is why fitting a belt on its own is false economy.

Water pump seizure, where the belt drives the pump. A seizing pump strips the belt instantly, and it is the reason the pump is replaced as part of the job even when it seems fine.

Contamination. Oil from a leaking cam or crank seal, or coolant from a weeping pump, softens and destroys the belt well before its interval.

What we do — our timing belt process

  1. Confirm the interval for your specific engine from the registration, along with whether the water pump is belt-driven and whether the belt also drives anything else.
  2. Quote the whole kit up front — belt, tensioner, idlers, and the water pump where applicable. We do not quote a belt and then add the rest.
  3. Lock the engine with proper timing tools, not by lining up marks. Marks are a guide; locking tools are what guarantee the camshafts and crankshaft are held in the correct position while the belt is off.
  4. Inspect the seals at the camshaft and crankshaft while access is open, because a leak that destroys the old belt will destroy the new one.
  5. Fit and tension to the manufacturer’s specification, then rotate the engine by hand through two full cycles and re-check. This step catches a tooth out of position before the starter does.
  6. Refill and bleed the cooling system where the pump has been replaced.
  7. Road test, then record it — in the service record and on a belt sticker under the bonnet with the date and mileage, so the next owner has proof.

What moves the price is access — how much has to come off to reach the belt — and whether the water pump is included. It is nearly always cheaper to do the pump at the same time than to pay the same labour twice.

Set that against a bent-valve repair, which starts around £1,200 and frequently ends in a replacement engine on an older car.

How long does it take?

Three to six hours for most cars, so it is usually a leave-it-with-us job rather than a wait. Engines with awkward access, or where the pump and auxiliary belt are done alongside, sit at the longer end.

What happens if you delay it?

This is the one job on the whole car where the honest answer is genuinely stark, and it is why we would rather over-communicate about it than undersell it.

A timing belt does not degrade gracefully or warn you. It works perfectly until the moment it does not, and on an interference engine that moment is usually terminal. Valves bend on contact with the pistons. The head comes off, the valves are replaced, and the head is skimmed or replaced — assuming a piston or the block has not been damaged too.

A planned job in the £250–£650 range becomes a repair in the low thousands, on a car that may not be worth it. And unlike most failures, there is no partial version: you do not get a warning light or a limp home.

Timing belt replacement for Birmingham drivers

Birmingham has an older-than-average vehicle stock, and that has two consequences that meet in exactly the wrong place.
