What is suspension repair?

Suspension does two jobs at once: it keeps the tyres in contact with the road, and it stops the car’s movements reaching you. Most people think of it as ride comfort. It is actually a braking and steering component, because a tyre that is bouncing is a tyre that is not gripping.

The parts that wear:

  • Shock absorbers (dampers) — hydraulic units that control spring movement. They do not hold the car up; they stop it oscillating
  • Coil springs — which carry the weight, and which crack
  • Top mounts and bearings — where the strut meets the body
  • Anti-roll bar, drop links and bushes — resisting body roll and one-sided movement
  • Wishbones and control arms, with their ball joints and rubber bushes

Most work is replacing one or more of those. Dampers and springs are always replaced in axle pairs, because a new unit on one side and a worn one on the other makes the car handle unevenly under braking.

Signs you need suspension work

  • The car keeps bouncing after a dip instead of settling in one movement — the classic worn damper test

What causes suspension wear?

Potholes and sharp-edged defects. A pothole delivers a violent vertical shock that suspension is designed to absorb occasionally, not constantly. Repeated impacts break springs, damage damper seals and distort wheels.

Kerb impacts at parking speed. These rarely leave visible damage and routinely knock the alignment out, which then wears tyres continuously.

Speed humps and cushions. Every hump is a compression and release cycle, and a damper is a component doing precisely that work — thousands of cycles wear its internal valving and seals. Cushions are worse in a specific way, because a car straddles them and loads one side of an axle at a time, which puts the strain through the anti-roll bar, its drop links and its bushes.

Age and corrosion. Rubber bushes perish. Coil springs corrode, particularly where road salt collects, and a corroded spring cracks without warning.

  1. Road test. Noises that only appear over a particular surface are far easier to identify in the car than on a ramp.
  2. Inspect on a ramp, loaded and unloaded. This is the step that separates a drop link from a top mount from a wishbone bush — they all produce noises in the same family and are only told apart by putting load through the joint and watching for movement.
  3. Check both sides and compare. Wear is often asymmetric, and the good side is the reference.
  4. Check the springs properly, including the lower coils where corrosion starts and cracks hide.
  5. Quote by axle where appropriate, and explain why.
  6. Wheel alignment afterwards. Replacing suspension components changes the geometry, so alignment is part of the job rather than an upsell.

What moves the price: whether parts are seized with corrosion, whether the damper is a separate unit or a complete strut assembly, and whether the car has adaptive or electronically controlled dampers, which cost considerably more.

How long does it take?

Drop links and bushes are typically an hour. Dampers or springs on one axle are two to four hours. A wishbone with pressed-in bushes can take longer if the fixings are corroded.

Most suspension work is same-day, and smaller jobs can often be done while you wait.

What happens if you delay it?

Worn suspension is one of the few faults with a direct, measurable safety cost. A bouncing tyre spends less time in contact with the road, which lengthens your stopping distance — the effect is largest in exactly the emergency stop where you need it least.

Then the money. Worn dampers and poor alignment scrub tyres out early, so you buy tyres more often than you should. Perished bushes let components move in ways they were not designed to, which accelerates wear on the parts either side of them.

And it is an MOT issue. Suspension accounts for roughly a fifth of all MOT failures nationally — second only to lighting — so an advisory this year is frequently a failure next year.
